What's More Important. the Content or the Layout of Your Site?

I'd like to think I've come pretty far as far as my online business is concerned, but there's still a lot to learn. I remember one of the first things Kyle taught is in the training was to focus on the content; and worry about making your website pretty later.

I'm still in the process of creating content for my sites, but I think it's time to take it to the next level.

After all... I am running a business and professionalism is everything.

I want my online presence to have impact on my readers/customers; and a mediocre site with a simple theme is something I believe I've outgrown.

2015 was an amazing year for my business, but 2016 is going to be even better. I plan on implementing email marketing, creating more videos, a premium theme, and branding myself as well as my sites so that people can see I mean business.

At the end of the day though, the most important thing is to help people; which is why I haven't really stressed the "look" my websites have right now. But having an awesome site doesn't hurt.

We are told Content is King...but...In my opinion, if the layout is awkard or difficult to navigate, or if the site looks like a dog's breakfast, the content would no longer matter. I likely wouldn't even give it a chance.
I think layout and looks are necessary to support great content. It's all one package.

I agree with the others - content is king. But now that you have some quality content I would split your time to do both. Say 70% writing new content and 30% making old content better. That would include rewriting AND appearance.

Those percentages are just an example. You should find a work flow that works for you.

Tom

Thank you. I think it's a good idea to revise old content.

Hi and I know that the main reason is that people come to the site for info but also the site has to look good as well and I think that if you make it look good for you and you are please then this will reflect in your writing

Content ALWAYS trumps appearance. If your site has top quality content it can be so ugly it makes your dog cry and people will still flock to your site. I KNOW because I have several UGLY sites that get hundreds, one that gets thousands of page views per day.

..."so ugly it makes your dog cry..." - thanks, I just got a good laudh!! True that too BTW!!! Nice...

lol thanks David - glad I gave you a chuckle :-)

People come to your site for info, so this is primary.

If this was a one or the other choice, I would have to take content over appearance....

I say this because you can have a great looking site but if there is no substance, you will lose the viewer quickly...

Have good content, however, and you will keep that visitor, even if the post is not presented in the prettiest manner...

But I am like most, I want both lol! Not sure if you can always have pretty, that is subjective, but certainly good content is under your control...

Good question and topic for discussion!

Cheers!
Dave : )
