How to Do Video WITHOUT Appearing on Video

Introduction

If you've been thinking about creating videos to share your content but DREAD the thought of showing yourself, all is not lost.

You can still create effective communication even if you are camera shy.

What you'll want to do is create a slide presentation then record yourself talking over the slides. The result will be a nice image and audio presentation that you can share across multiple venues.

You'll Need a Screen Capture Program

In order to create this type of content you'll need a screen capture program.

There are some free versions (check Google), but the two most popular paid programs are Camtasia and Screenflow (the latter is what I use to create videos and trainings).

A screen capture program allows you to record:

  1. Your screen movements (slides, windows you open, cursor)
  2. Computer audio
  3. Your own microphone audio
  4. Your own computer or 3rd party camera

All of these "channels" can be mixed or turned on / off at will, though you might have limitations with a free program.

The beauty of a paid version is that you get far more capabilities. You can also add titles, transitions, zoom in, zoom out, and highlighting. For example, you can darken the whole screen and focus on one area to make a point.

Some Best Practices

  1. The best slide presentations mix images and slides with minimal text (just the big idea). I use the image picker here at WA to load up my presentations with lots of images.
  2. Pick images that are compelling, and that communicate the ideas you are presenting.
  3. Be sure to use a script as you record to stay on track and cover the important points.
  4. Speak with enthusiasm for your topic. It will come across even without your face on the screen.

Must You Create Video?

I'm going to go against the grain here and say you do not have to create video to be a successful online entrepreneur.

One of my favorite marketers, André Chaperon, is strictly a word guy. Even his signature courses are all written trainings (no videos) and sell for $495. They are worth every penny.

As long as your content is good and is meeting a real need for your visitors you'll be fine.

However, if you have the time and energy, video is an awesome channel to get your best stuff out to more audiences in ways they like to consume it. Better yet, you can strip out the audio, and now you'll have an audio channel for those who like to listen to content.

Finally, you may just find that speaking about your favorite topic over a few images is far easier and more enjoyable than writing long-form content. If that's the case, record your video, then create a transcript of the audio and use that as the basis for your article.

I was really leery of videos, but now really enjoy doing them. I use PowerPoint and Screencast-o-matic to make mine. Then for the post I use the video plus a transcript of the script. Wish I could do them faster -- they take longer than a regular post -- and I think they are really effective.

You are right, they do take a while to create. The many positives are that videos become an incredible asset to use in many different ways AND you get develop a valuable skill.

Good luck.
