What to Include in a Product Review

So, I am sure we all know by now that Google is studying product reviews very carefully to ensure they are not simply a re-write of a product description or specification.

But what can you include in a review to make it better than all the others?

Establish Authority as a Trusted Reviewer

Try and include an author bio at the bottom of the post, preferably with a photo.

This will build up trust with your readers; they will know you are just a normal person who experiences the same problems and has found a solution.

You need to establish a human connection.

Empathize With Your Readers

Use the PAS formula - Problem, Agitate, Solve.

Find a pain point, agitate it, then solve it.

Let's see it in action -

Problem - If you're an affiliate marketer, you have a tough job. You struggle with finding content ideas, and no one clicks your links.

Agitate - What's worse is when affiliate programs slash commissions, and you don't have the right tools to check what's working.

Solve - No worries. We curated this list of affiliate marketing tools to help analyze your competitors, increase conversions, grow your business, and more.

Give Them the Solution

Start with a brief explanation of the product, who developed it, maybe a quick history of the company, and why they stand out from their competitors.

Offer an easy-to-read overview of the product, and set out its best features.

Ease of use, support, usefulness.

List the pros and cons, and give it your own star rating.

Also, include who the product is for - Best for Beginners.

Highlight Key Features

Build your features around what your readers are looking for.

Remember, your reader may already have visited the manufacturer's site and already know what it looks like and what it is capable of.

It's your job to show what it can do for them and how it solves their problems.

How is it used in real life to solve real problems?

Show them the benefits, don't just quote product specifications.

Your Conclusion and Call-to-Action

Remember, many people read this section first to decide if it's worth reading the rest of the post.

So, summarize your findings, give your overall opinion and emphasize that the product is the perfect solution to the problem.

Writing a product review is not easy; take your time!

Thanks, Diane. I find them difficult, unless it is a product reviewed by a bunch of different people, so you can get different ideas. But it is hard if there aren't any other reviews of the product. Unless I buy every product I review which is out of the question right now for sure.

Hi Diane. Thanks for the information, it came at exactly the right time.

I just wrote my first two product reviews and I was thinking about the best place to put the call to action.

Around the middle of the post, at the end, or both places? What would be your recommendation?

Thank you in advance.

Definitely towards the end, as they may not have made up their mind to purchase until they have read the entire review. So, then, for convenience sake, it will be right there in front of them.

But if it's a relatively long review, then you could add it in the middle as well, as long as it doesn't look too pushy or salesy.

Thanks for the quick response.

One is around 1800 words and the other is around 2000. I wrote about confectionery equipment that I regularly work with.

I included some related confectionery technology information so that it doesn't seem so salesy, but also informative.
I hope this doesn't make it boring.

I'm just logging off now, but I will take a look tomorrow if you want? Assuming you have published them. Obviously, I still have the details of your site from our previous PMs.

It would be great, thank you. One is published, the other needs some photos first. My problem is that the new posts are not showing until I ask site support to clear the cache.

Outstanding post and for someone in my stage of development (trying to find products to review etc.), this is article is going to be very helpful.

That is why I book marked it!

One question however, would you recommend applying the same steps to books and services you want to review?

Would you dedicate ONE article per review? I’m thinking yes, but I’ve seen where others may include several like products.

Would one way, be other than the other?

Thank you for your feedback and guidance.

Hi - yes, the same principles apply no matter what you are promoting.

You can actually do what is called a buying guide.

This is where you have a "best of" or "Top 3" comparison.

You then give a broader overview of several similar products.

This alone could be enough to persuade people to purchase.

But then also do a singular more in-depth review of each product, and use internal links to guide your readers to the more informative reviews, in case they haven't quite made up their mind.

Thank you for this advice and guidance Diane.

Super Diane. You always teach us so much and you do it so well.
I need a "DS" file for all your lessons.
Be blessed today.
