Don't Approve Poor Comments!

So, just a quick post today about Site Comments.

Yes, I know, it's a subject that comes up often, the quality of the responses you receive when asking for comments on your posts.

I know that some of you perhaps feel guilty if you disapprove a comment.

But at the end of the day, it's your business that's at stake, and it can affect your rankings.

See this quote from John Mueller at Google -

In other words, anything that is written on your website, even if other people wrote it, will be used for ranking purposes.

If you receive a comment that is poorly written, irrelevant, or unacceptable in any way, don't hesitate to disapprove it.

Google sees it as part of your content, as though you had written it yourself!

Of course, you should give appropriate feedback as to why you did this, so the other member doesn't continue to make the same mistake.

Hey Diane, thanks for the post!

May I ask you something?

If we don't approve a comment, it doesn't show up on our site, right?

So, how do we give feedback about the comment?

Do we just use the email they used to give the comment and respond to that?

Thanks!

Hi - if you disapprove a comment, it won't appear on your website, and a box will pop up where you can enter your reason.

Oh ok, thanks, Diane!

One last thing, will that reason show up under comments on our website or get emailed to them somehow?

The purpose of this post is about using the Site Comments feature here at WA. If you disapprove a comment, they are notified by WA.

Is that what you mean, or are you talking about organic comments from genuine visitors? If you are not happy with a genuine comment, just trash it, you don't engage in a discussion with them.

Oh, I'm sorry,

Yeah, I was talking about organic comments.

Thanks again!

Hi Diane,

I utilize Site Comments often, so I’m vigilant when it comes to approving comments.

Every now and then, I’ll get a comment that’s not related to the topic of my post. Or in some cases, the commenter will provide feedback on the post (i.e. more suited for Site Feedback instead).

Obviously if it’s spam, that’s an immediate disapproval.

I think it’s important to approve comments that are relevant and provide value to an article. So it’s good to keep in mind, especially when writing helpful, high-quality content.

Thank you for sharing and the reminder :)

Regards,

-Eric

Thanks for sharing the valuable information. Bad comment we can disapprove, delete, and block it. It is fair to us.
Do you have any sharing for backlinks? Can we block it? Delete it from our website. I found my website has a lot of bad backlinks with high spam%, can you share how to handle it?

You can "disavow" the bad backlinks inside of Google Search Console.

Thank you very much. Today I have submitted the disavow list to Google Search Console to remove 20 URLs and 5 domains, mostly are high spam% backlinks.

I do not approve poor comments. The comments have actual value and if we approve them, then we are decreasing the value of the system. We are saying it is ok to turn in poor work.

That was never true in school, nor is it true in business.

This is not a hobby - business is business.

Alex

I couldn’t agree more. However I find it to be nice when giving a reason why. Some people have been rude to the reason why. Which in sense has them lose a customer. Thanks for sharing
