Using Stories Can Be Dynamic

Telling stories to make your point

Most people love hearing stories. They resonate with us. The good ones stick with us long after we first heard them.

In fact, some of the most memorable songs are built on stories. If you have ever heard any of the following, you probably still remember them well:

  • Cats in the Cradle by Harry Chapin
  • Last Kiss by Wayne Cochran
  • Take the Money and Run by the Steve Miller Band
  • Billie Jean by Michael Jackson
  • Copacabana by Barry Manilow
  • America by Neil Diamond

And of course, The Devil Went Down to Georgia by the Charlie Daniels Band.

I could list hundreds more quite easily. And they would represent all genres with a wide range of emotions and tones.

The important part is that the story singes so deeply that the song and singer/band remain ingrained in our memories. The stories may be based on a true happening, a fictional story, or, quite often, a blend.

That doesn't really matter. We enjoy the story.

Your post can tell a memorable story, too.

Even without the musical accompaniment, your prose can make that strong statement that your readers will remember for years to come.

If they identify with the message, they will probably share it with others, too, giving it even more life.

To be effective, you don't need your entire post to be a story in itself. In fact, you might choose to lead out with a story in your introduction. Or perhaps you include a short story within the article in a place where it fits neatly. It might even appear near the conclusion.

Your story might be something that happened to you or that you did. Or it might be something you heard from others. The point is that it is

  • interesting and engaging
  • relevant to the article
  • fitting with your website's intent

Also, your story need not be a long version. Keep it concise enough that it does not detract from the post, itself. It should ADD to the post, not overtake it. Unless, of course, you have a way of making the story into the actual post. But even then, keep your writing tight and concise, but interesting.

Have you tried the story approach in your writing? If so, has it helped the article and your site?

Great learning here, Diane.

Sometimes I try to compare my writing to what I have read... I am very interested in the story and very engaging.

Sometimes I tried to apply it to my own writing; It's work a little, not really as I am not a real writer like you. Thank you so much for your ideas.

Best wishes,
Thanks,
Joyce

I'm glad you found it interesting and useful, Joyce. Keep in mind that when you are writing, you ARE a real writer!

Have a wonderful day!

Thank you so much.
Joyce:-)

I agree with Diane. You need to keep in mind that you ARE a real writer! AND... we all get better at ANYTHING just by practicing and every time we do it we get a little better. We're all learning!

Thank you, Steve! You have a point, as Diane said.

I agree -- if you can illustrate your point with a story, it works well. And, speaking of music, at my age, the most profound line I've ever found in lyrics in my opinion comes from "The Gambler," and it goes, "the most you can hope for is to die in your sleep." Think about it...quite profound...

I do like your song choices.

Thank you, Fran. I agree; the Gambler is one of those songs that when you consider what it says, it makes you stop and think a moment.

Have a wonderful day, my friend!

I can't get this blog off my mind. My WA blog and website are not the same. Here I can tell a story n put a lil, lol. I feel like my website is boring and needs a lil lol. I must slack off the seriousness of my website and throw a lil story in occasionally, Lward, knows I have many to tell. I've lead an exciting life.
Thank you Diane for enlightening me.

You are welcome. Yes, please try the story approach. It helps your readers connect with you in a different way.

Excellent ideas. Whle I haven't used stories in my writing much, my wife does. One of our sites is about type 1 diabetes and she shares stories of our experiences with our grandsons type 1. It seems to be an effective way of sharing thenecessary information. I will try harder to incorporate stories into my own writing. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, Rick, those types of stories are some that I find especially easy to relate to.

Thank you!

I agree with you.
Good stories can provoke a response and move people to take action.

Yes, and that action is our hoped-for response!
