Too Many Ideas?

Is it possible to have too many ideas?

(scroll down for a cute picture of Fire)

I know that we all struggle at times to come up with the right topics to write about. We might even wonder where the next idea is coming from.

Have you ever felt the need to use "answer the public" or "answer socrates'? Maybe you jump on the forums for ideas or perhaps you do some google searches.

We learn many ways to find topics.

And I keep a running list of future topics, just in case I ever find myself at a loss.

Maybe it's because of my ongoing list. Or maybe it's my multi-tasking mind. Perhaps it's the rabbit trails that call out to me.

Whatever the reasons, my list of future topics just keeps growing. At first, I thought it might be like a crop of weeds that was unstoppable.

But then I thought about it. Those topics are more like beautiful flowers in various stages of growth. Some may fail to bloom, of course. But most have pretty good potential to blossom into delightful topics. Some might even make the rank of pillar content.

There is a danger, of course.

For me, at least, the danger lurks. Right now I have such a large list that my mind wanders, trying to decide which topic I should do next. Yes, those rabbit trails call out to me.

And as a result, I have many posts in the "almost done" or "pending" phases. That is a big danger.

Imagine a dress shop where the material is cut out, waiting to be sewn together. Or perhaps a bakeshop with cake batter and cookie dough, ready to be formed and baked.

That is the danger my posts face.

Even if I have great keywords and well-written posts, if I don't finish them and publish them, they sit like a packet of flower seed, waiting to be opened and sown.

Do you ever find yourself in that situation? You have many good ideas and partially finished posts, but need to finish editing and adding those finishing touches?

If so, how do you handle it? (Please comment below)

For me, I seem to let them gather up until I suddenly notice that I have let them accumulate. Then I find a day (or a week, if I need) and get to work on completing them. Yes, I know, it's easier to do one at a time. As organized as I am, that is one of the issues I am still working on! 😉

It's a rainy week, so Fire and I will be spending quality time at the computer, finishing some slightly in need posts.

Shameless Mom Brag--I have some of the most awesome kids in the universe! In the pouring rain, one of my sons is walking Fire with an umbrella to keep her dry (stitches can't get wet) while he gets drenched! And he's done this several times!

Til tomorrow, I am diligently editing and completing tasks!

Hi Diane
As you know I think, I use notion.os for everything including writing ideas and development. An idea is recorded as an object at the left side of a Kan Ban table and is moved column by column to the right, step by step until published and indexed.
:-)
Richard

That sounds like a very organized plan, Richard!

I, too, keep a list of future ideas and have too many to ever do them all. I love Reddit and Quora for finding ideas. Often when I write an article, I already know what my next topic will be.

Fortunately, I have most of mine finished, and the ones I don't, have to do with baking and getting the recipe just right.

Good luck, Diane, in getting your almost finished posts finished. And great analogies, btw! I especially like the one about topics are beautiful flowers in various stages of growth (rather than unstoppable weeds).

Lynn

Thank you, Lynn. I'm glad you liked the post and analogies.
Best wishes for you on your posts, too!

Definitely I find myself inundated with ideas all the time and I start off with a post and then get called away and or get distracted. Then I start off on another idea and the process repeats.

You can never have too many ideas - perish that thought.

I find when I get too many of these I attempt to discipline myself to work on each one for a set period of time - even if only 15 minutes. Eventually they get done and the get posted.

Sometimes when doing my 15 minutes, I get caught up in it and I spend enough time to finish a post.

It is not a perfect system, but it works for me.

Alex

It sounds like a similar situation to mine, Alex. And if it works, that's great!

It shouldn't be possible to have too many ideas my friend, but I believe the issue is how to best organise and arrange the ideas we have so that they can be beneficial to us moving forward.

I have ideas coming out of my head at most times of the day, and whilst I do consider myself to be somewhat organized, jotting down these ideas and future plans has become a nightmare task!!

Keeping things simple is the way to go for me for now I believe!

Fire is looking great, I sincerely hope that everything is ok for your four legged friend Diane.

Yes, you are right, Nick. I believe that organization and planning are always needed.
Fire is happy and doing well. We got some "not great" news--the CT shows that surgery is not recommended as the tumor is too close to the trachea. But we continue...

I'm sorry to hear that Diane. Continue is all you can do my friend.

Awww. The things we do for our pets lol

hahaha--very true, Geoffrey!
