Is Sleep Over-rated?

Today is one of THOSE days!

One of my older dogs, an adorable and quite amiable poodle, needed to get up at 3am. Not totally unusual, mind you. We seem to do this routine frequently.

But today I really could have used an extra hour or two of sleep.

I've never had the luxury, nor the desire really, to sleep in. I know many enjoy those days they can wake after the sun. It's never been my life. And that's fine. I enjoy the quiet time in the morning before life begins for most people.

But 3am came awfully early today. So I'm still struggling with focusing on content.

Oh, I have written some. I will definitely need to go back over it tomorrow or the next day.

And this isn't the first time. I often arise earlier than I plan. I have kids, dogs, and our farm. Life happens.

But I also noticed something interesting today.

My mind is wandering (no surprise there!) and I've found an entirely new channel to travel on one of my sites.

And now I'm thinking...I've heard that many enjoy segmented sleep (shorter sleep times 2 or more times in a 24 hr period) and I guess I fall into that practice some days. Other days I just go with the 4 or 5 hours and it works.

But then, Di Vinci and Tesla had very strange sleep schedules, too.

(No, I am no artist nor engineer/inventor!)

So maybe there is a bit of good that happens on those all too frequent short nights. My writing abilities might suffer slightly (or more than slightly!). But my creativity seems to be working.

Hi Diane

I haven't habitually slept more than 5 hours at a stretch for years (although, when I was having chemotherapy, I often slept the whole weekend away after a dose).

Where I come from there is a saying that "there will be time enough for sleeping when we're dead!"

I guess that is why death is sometimes called "the big sleep". lol

Kind regards, Wazza

I have heard that chemo knocks many people out for some time. I guess it's that healing power needed.
The "sleeping when dead" saying is frequent in our area, too. Moms of young children often use it in my friendship circle.

Diane,
Chance is like that sometimes too. He will wake me up in the dark hours of the morning to go out. But most of the time I am able to fall back to sleep.

As far as sleep being over-rated is concerned, I don't feel it is. But each person is different. Some can go without a lot of sleep and have no affect, others need a full night of sleep to be able to function properly the next day.

I guess you can say it's all relative.

Yes, you are probably right. Individual needs and preferences apply.

Once I'm awake, I'm up. Probably comes from my youth, growing up on the family farm. I've always been like that. But I am able to catch a nap during the day when necessary, so I guess it's all good.

I agree Barbara, each person is different. If I don't get in my sleep the whole day goes the way of the doodoo, am not joking there. But I do know a coworker who barely sleeps and is able to function as well, hopefully though it stays like that as they are younger than I am

Thank you very much for you response, Christorv.
Much appreciated.

You're right Diane. What works for one person doesn't necessarily work for another.

Hi Diane, I did an article on sleep:

Teenagers (14-17): Sleep range widened by one hour to 8-10 hours (previously it was 8.5-9.5)

Younger adults (18-25): Sleep range is 7-9 hours (new age category)

Adults (26-64): Sleep range did not change and remains 7-9 hours

Older adults (65+): Sleep range is 7-8 hours (new age category)

It is the only time the brain is supposed to process certain things and re-generate itself.

From what I understand Elon Musk (Tesla) is now the richest man beating out Bezos.

Best wishes,
Michael

Good information, Michael. Thanks! I may need to adjust my sleeping times to fit those parameters.

Hey Diane, I hope you are well today?

In answer to your question, I personally believe that sleep is definitely not overrated!

If I don't get my 8 hours at least, I tend to wake up a little cranky and feel less than recharged for the coming challenges that the next day presents!

But that is just me!

We are each individuals!

We are indeed Diane!

I wrote a book about small and large dog training in German and translated it into English so everything you are interested in about dog psychology, puppy to adult breeding and dog training you can ask me anything and I will answer you as soon as possible, just have a little patience because I still work in the firm. Sincerely, Ljubomir Tomic,

That's interesting. You can pm me a link to your book and I'll take a look. I have many years as a trainer, as well. But I always enjoy reading others.
