When grabbing information or links directly from a public or government source do we just cite the source or do we need special permission?
Let's start with I'm not a lawyer and this cannot be construed in terms of legal advice. Onmyownterms is right in terms of Google Ranking. In terms of the law, they usually have a terms and conditions page. Generally for the Federal Government it's in the public domain by law, but that's not always true. Not sure about states. If you really can't find anything on the site, there's usually a way to contact the site administrator to ask. Even in the public domain though, like Mel said, cite your source and use judiciously.
Always cite your source, and always rewrite the content, only taking a bit (aka curate the content). Wholesale copy/pasting is not good for rank.
