At War: Resolutions, Goals and Bad Habits

Many of us have made valiant and noble resolutions to accomplish the world this year. Some have listed them out on paper, typed them in word documents or have committed them to memory. Others have either forgotten about them or have given up already.

For some of us, all of these noble “plans” were made without any thought of changing any retaining poor habits or tendencies that could easily thrust us back into our old ways.

If there is one thing that life-experience and wisdom have taught us, is that nothing changes unless change first takes place in our minds. As the saying goes, “old habits die hard!” What were we thinking?

Resolution or Goal?

We must understand that there is a huge difference between a resolution and a goal.A resolution is a resolute decision to stop or to do something. It’s an action word. We do it or we don’t…That’s it! No serious planning, methodology nor strategy goes into it really; just truly good well-meaning intentions. If we are really strong we might very well accomplish it. However, if we haven’t managed to deal with our mindsets, that’s another story. We may also need some extra help in order to “resolve” as well.

Resolutions:

  • I will stop eating chocolates in 2018
  • I will go to bed earlier at night.

Those are simple tasks.

Goals:

  • I want to run the 10k marathon in August
  • I will become an expert online marketer by the end of the year
  • I will earn a 5-figure income by December

Are these things possible? Sure, they are but in order to accomplish them there must be a strategic plan. A method and a process to get there. This must all be written down, structured and worked towards.

Let’s finish the race!

Finally, I want to encourage you never to give up on your dreams, goals and even resolutions. However, learn to separate them (Resolutions | Goals) and make sure to put a realistic plan in place for goals.

Use something as simple as Google calendar, and its tasks scheduler. Follow it daily. It’s not too late.

Just do it!:)

Please pardon my conjecture. This is written in the spirit of brotherly love.

Good motivation I just got creeped out when you said just do it I don't mean I got creeped out by you its just that I have been watching deep web browsing episodes on you tube and I came across some crazy story called heavens gate and I they used the saying "just do it " for suicidal encouragement . but yeah you nailed it thanks for the motivation,:)

Hi Eric!
Thanks for your kind words.
Yes, we have to be careful with people giving the wrong kind of motivation. That just shows that we have to be so careful of the triggers that others are exposed to; and what we say...
All the best for success!
David

Nice support again David!

Debbie

That's great, Debbie!
I wish you well as you follow the plan that leads to your goals!!
All the best!

That is the cutest video ever! I love the dogs!

I don't do New Year's resolutions. They seem hollow and nobody seems to follow through on them anyway. I like changing habits and setting goals however. I like breaking them into steps with specific measures. So instead of "I will have a successful website", I would say "I will set up my website so I have X number of posts by X date" or "I will set up X affiliate by X date" or "I will get X comments by X date". These are more realistic goals and I can actually achieve them step by step.

Of course that is still easier said than done. Bumps pop up along the way like sickness, visiting family and friends, technical glitches etc. We have to be flexible, but it is easier to stay on track when meeting a series of small goals than one massive goal...at least for me.

Jessica

I knew you would love those dogs, Jessica!
Yes! Whatever works for you but you seem to get the job done. The goals can be realistic and allow for some flexibility.
Thanks for sharing! Much appreciated.

David

I don't get enough done though...I still don't make much income. At least I make some income now over the cost of membership/domain fees.

Good thing I have a good job. I will keep on plugging away though.

Yes! Keep at it. Let's see what happens at the end of the year.

Great insight!

Thanks, Jared!
Just wanted to encourage.
David

Yes David Goal = node, resolution = link line!

That's correct, Mike. Let's hop along:)

Who's more determined???

Tried and true

Elaine

Hey, Elaine!! No one as much as you. :)

David

I am not great at planning, but I understand it's easier to achieve things and deal with everyday stress planning things, actually getting them written down. Thanks for the post, David.:)

Thanks for sharing Vera. Just try! Break that "not great" mindset!!:)
David

The animals are more determined than us to win . I should feel crap about myself now lol

Lol. You got it Shweta. I didn't want to put it that way in the post but you said it!
Thank you!
All the best!
