Steps To Help Your Facebook Fan Page Work For You

Are you a Facebook Fan? I am, even though I realize that it is not the easiest way to gain customers. For some strange reason I seem to naturally understand the workings of Facebook, and fortunately do not find it hard work to keep updated. Maybe I am not an earthling, but actually from Planet Book Face, as my husband calls it.

Understanding Facebook

The first and most important factor to remember is that Facebook is a SOCIAL platform. This means you need to engage and socialize here, not just work your business.

I sometimes find it is easier to explain if I relate the socializing to the real world. A great example is if you go out on a first date, you are hopefully, not going to meet your date and immediately ask them to marry you. You are more likely to go through a wooing process. A few dates, get to know them, exchange ideas, meet the family and so on, and only then pop the question.

Facebook is the same, you need to attract your friends, get to know them, share tidbits about yourself, find out what they are looking for, then drop business into the conversation.

Remember as this is a social site you will quickly get into trouble if you start to drop your link everywhere, especially in groups, this is spamming.

Basics to Setting Up A Fanpage

I am not going to go into the exact details of how you physically set up your fan page, there are great tutorial videos already out there on how to do this.

Great your page is active, now what do you do?

Firstly take the time to fill in all the relevant information about yourself. This includes adding a picture of yourself to your profile, or even better still a video. Insert a great Header Picture of Video. Fill in all the about me information in detail. Believe it or not people read this. Complete the sections to do with your interests and hobbies. Add in your website and set up your email address. Don't forget Messenger, one of the best marketing tools available.

People seem to skip most of the above, and this can be a bad marketing move.

When I first started my Fanpage I did boost my welcome video. I only spent a few dollars, used an engagement ad and it did draw in a number of followers. I was and am still reluctant to invite friends to join my page, as on the whole I do not believe this is my target audience. I am very aware of which of my friends are interested in my business and over time they have actually come to my page on their own.

Chatting Business and Adding Links on Your Page

Even though this is a Fan/Business Page it is still all about socializing. When you do a new business post keep it interesting by picturing yourself chatting to your Facebook followers in a social setting. How would you interact at say a cocktail party, do you immediately go in for the kill about your business or do you do the small talk first and try to get to know the person you are talking to, and hold their attention?

Though this is hard to fathom, your business posts should be kept to under 10% of all your posts on your page. Even then it is wise to keep them short and link them, with an acceptable Facebook link, to your website or offer. Again, keep the post social and engaging, and maybe add your link to the picture, or simply say, at the end of your post, "if you want to know more please click on my link."

What Else Do I Post On My Page?

The rest of your Fanpage content should be made up of personal stories, blogs, inspirational type quotes, some humor if that is your style. You can also include current affairs, however, it is wise to stay away from very controversial topics.

Other ways of connecting with your fans is to ask questions, ask for their opinions, respond to them. It is all about engagement.

When and How Often Should I Post to My FanPage

Like most social/networking platforms on the internet you can actually track your user data related to your page. As most of my followers are not in New Zealand, my peak traffic is often when I am asleep. I overcome this by scheduling my posts to go out at certain times based on my statistics on when my peak traffic is.

The more you post to any of the social sites the higher your engagement will become over time. One big hint is to post regularly, and keep consistent. If you only post once a week make sure you do this every week, preferably at the same time. It is not advisable to say post 20 posts this week and then only 4 the next week. Consistency is the key.

Your fans are watching you, they will respond when they are ready, not in your time. They want to know that you are around for the long haul, and I will say it again and again, they want to build up trust with you.

Using Videos On Facebook

On your Fanpage you have the ability to video directly to your page. I love this, it is easy to do, and definitely gets great reaction and higher exposure than posts or blogs.

Most of us are not comfortable going on video, all I can say is just do it. Have a plan of what you are going to say, keep it short and to the point, and always end with a call to action.

My videos always get a higher comment rate and FB appears to give them larger organic reach.

I do teasers, so I may do a short post saying something along the lines of, "Do you want to know how much money I am making online? If the answer is yes, I will post a video tomorrow at 2pm, be sure not to miss it." Then make sure you carry through with this, as you do not want your followers to think you are unreliable.

Some Fun Statistics About Facebook

Worlwide there are over 2.32 billion active monthly users.

Facebook users are 76% female.

The most common age demographic is 25 to 34.

The Highest traffic occurs between 1 to 3 pm.

Traffic increases by 18% on Thursdays and Fridays.

The average time spent on Facebook is 20 minutes.

There are over 83 million fake profiles.

These may just be interesting statistics, but they can actually help you to set up your Facebook campaign if studied and used correctly.

Is Facebook The Social Platform For You?

Facebook may not be for you. I will be the first to admit it can take a long time to get any engagement and may not even lead to sales. I use it as I want to build my personal brand, and I feel this is a great platform to do it on.

If you do use Facebook please remember at all times it is your responsibility to know the rules and to stick to them.

Advertising can also be expensive, hard to understand and easy to break the rules. Advertising on Facebook, in my opinion is a continuous learning curve.

Whichever platform you choose to market your website, I would strongly suggest, get good at it then move on to the next.

I hope this article was of interest to you, please drop me a comment, as always I would appreciate your opinion.

Thank you for sharing. I found your post very informative. I have been wondering if Facebook is for me as I really don’t have many followers.
I’m glad to know that I don’t have to ‘bug’ my friends to follow my business and you’ve given some great ideas on how to increase my ‘fan base’.

Thank you for your comment, I am by no means an expert on FB, but I do enjoy working my page and I hope I can share some valuable tips.

Hi Denise, some real value in your post, steady and consistent engagement can create some good outcomes, I am always reminded of that saying play the game by the rules and you will not get caught out.

A lot of folks have this misconception that folks just share what they had for breakfast on a daily basis, the thing is that there is a level of sophistication on Facebook, it has gone way beyond that, and for marketers, it represents and presents so many positive possibilities.

Thank you for sharing your insights Denise, much appreciated.

Alex.

Hi Alex, thank you for your comment. Yes Facebook is a great platform, but like anything on the internet it is always changing and has it's unique rules. Do you have a Fan Page?
Regards
Denise

Just getting back into it, they do have their unique rules and one has to be careful when it comes to marketing on the platform.

Like all things, we need to have a strategy based on outcomes and just take time to build that engagement.

Alex

I, too, enjoy FB and seem to understand it. I have a business page. I put links to each new post on there, and invite visitors to like my page. I answer every comment, so I can get a conversation going if possible. I have put in boosts to my posts from time to time if they are doing well...$10 or $20...my visitors have increased and so have my regulars. It all takes time, but we knew that...

I think you have worked out the ins and outs of your page really well, and it sounds like it is working for you. When I started my Fan Page I did not add that many links, but as time went on and I gained confidence I started to add them to all my posts. I feel someone who is not confident on Face Book should probably start on the cautious side. I also boost my posts, and did do some advertising, but the advertising was costing me too much money. I am not a happy Twitter, so will probably only ever use this site as a share one.
Do you use Facebook Messenger Bots?
Thanks as always for your comment.
Denise.

No, I don't use those. Please tell me how they work. I got on Messenger so could communicate with some of the responders easier, but not seeing Messenger come up.

I ask people to send me a message via Messenger, this is my preferred way to communicate. Messenger Bots are now the new way of sending out your business information and is done through Messenger. I do not have a full understanding of it yet and unfortunately the training available is so expensive. They say it will take over from emails, but really who knows? This is something I will look into at a later stage.

Well, at least I have an idea what to look for. Thanks. And thanks about the info re: messenger.
