Big Decisions to Ponder on this Weekend.

If you've read some of past blog posts, then you'll know that I have a day job. It has been very rocky recently and my future with the current day job I have is very uncertain past April.

I'm EXTREMELY fortunate to still have one at this time considering February 9th was originally supposed to be my last day. Thankfully another client came in and had the same position for me as the last client did so I continue on for a couple more months at least, but that is all considering it is only a temporary client (tax season).

Here in the last 3 weeks though, a position became open at a local bank here in my town that pays fairly close to what I'm making now from my current day job. My best friend's wife's cousin, who works at another branch in town said they are needing to try and fill it fast considering training is supposed to start March 1st. (It's been pushed back).

Well I applied, got an interview with HR at their headquarters in the nearby city, had to take some tests after the interview, passed them and got a second one with the regional manager this past Wednesday. That interview went well also, but here's the thing. I was told I would know today whether or not I would get the position so their HR called me and said they would not offer me that position at this time because I just don't have any experience in the banking industry, however, because of how well my interviews went, they offered me another position.

The only problem is, it's a fairly drastic cut in pay from what I make right now at my current job. The good thing about it though is that it is in town and I would not have to commute to my job which I currently do now and takes anywhere from 30 to 35 minutes depending on construction and traffic. Plus, my LONG TERM prospects for advancing and getting more pay are much better than what they currently are now. The hours are better, I have paid holidays off, paid sick leave and a more relaxed but professional environment compared to what it is at my current job.

The thing though that would hurt is a cut in pay in the short term. So other options are to work even harder on my websites here at WA and start doing more freelance work to make up for the cut in pay I'd be losing. I dabbled a bit in the world of freelancing last year and made more money than I thought, but I got distracted and didn't keep with it (that distraction kept me from working on my websites at the time too).

This will give even more incentive to succeed here. I want to reach the financial goals I've set out for myself, but I've now got to work harder than ever to achieve that so that hopefully I can reach them sooner rather than later. Ok, I've spoken enough. Wish me luck on making the right decision.

It's a tough decision Brian but only you know the best answer. I really wish you luck with this.

Thank you

Brian, go with your 'gut' instinct.

Hello Brian, very hard decision. If it was me I would look at the pros and cons of both position to see what is the offset. I would also look at how much I would be giving up short term and put a value if possible to the benefits to see if they are worth more than the short term loss. That might help with your decision.

Thanks Harvey. I've actually started doing that and I have to say right now everything is leaning towards this potential new job. I don't know what my job outlook is going to be past April if I stay where I'm at so I could be in a far worse position at that time vs going to this new job.

I would not have much money left over after bills to do a whole lot, but that might be a blessing in disguise as it will help me stop wasteful spending anyway, and I do have a cushion of sorts in a savings account if things get too drastic.

Everyone I've talked to who works at what could be my new employer absolutely loves it and they do very well of promoting within and giving raises for good performance so in the long term, my employment prospects look far better than my current employer.

Tough decision. You will make the right one.

Hi, a very interesting article. Irv.

Think about the pro and cons very deeply. You should look at it from a long term perspective. Hope you get clarity to make the right decision.

I am starting to think of it more long term and I have to say that the prospects look a lot better at this new potential job than my current one. Also, something that happened two days ago at my current job really has me contemplating my safety.

Safety is a priority!

Make a list of all the pros/cons and see which side is bigger. Also sleep on it. I ALWAYS sleep on big decisions and often find clarity in the morning when my brain has worked without my interference. You'll know you've made the right decision when you feel peace. Good luck.

Very good advice, thank you :)

Best of success to you, Brian. Which ever decision you make will be the right one for you.

Thank you!
