How Do You Do It?

Last Update: January 10, 2020

Honestly, I look at at my ranking and feel sad. Not so long ago I was nearing 50, and now I'm not even in the top 200. This was a conscious decision because there is only so much time and putting it into WA activities that don't specifically impact my business is just not something I'm sure that I can afford.

It's been a hectic month with christmas, new year, a family holiday (vacation), bushfires etc. and I acknowledge I'm behind with my business goals on all fronts. Today is the day I'm taking action to get back on track but I'm wondering how everyone else balances WA activites with their own business ones?

I know we are a community and you have to give as well as receive in any community but there seem to be a heap of givers here and I wonder how much is tied up with seeing that ranking at a nice low level and if there's an element of distraction from actually doing the work to build our business? Please don't get upset with me asking that question because it is genuinely asked. I would really like to know how, and if you have an effect means of balancing WA engagement with your own onlune business goals.

Thanks :) Getting stuck into work now :)

Priorities are just that - the things which must come first, and WA Rank is not one of those things. You won't make any money being within the Top 50 or Top 100 or Top 200. It just taps into our inherent competitive nature and is something we can easily affect so it generates satisfaction in that area. BUT your first priority when you can here was to build a site so you could earn money. That's where your focus needs to be.

Thanks Jeannine. It's a very good lesson in prioritising and keeping ones mind focused on where it needs to be. Also not projecting onto others my own feelings of guilt for not contributing as much as I see others doing. That's been the greatest lesson for me in all of this; that people will understand and not judge when you just haven't got the time to do all you would like to.

People won't judge you. There are also 2,000,000 other folks who can share their wisdom and advice, so you are not abandoning those people with questions. You've done so much already. Now it's time to focus on making your needs the first priority.

Hello Deb, I am new here on WA and I have just started on my journey and I can relate to what you are saying because I have spent time on forums in the past and it can really take up lots of time, posting and replying to comments.

I think once your business is up and running on its own then you will have more time to share your experiences here on WA. I wouldn't worry about ranking as much just when you can contribute I am sure everyone will understand. Wishing you a prosperous day!

Thanks for the support? I do admit to feeling guilty for not reading and commenting on as many blogs as I would like to.

It is a balancing act for sure when it comes to time for the community and time for the business. I think all of us have this dilemma to deal with.

Having a low rank is all well and good, but more important is that the business side of things gets done, as that is where the bulk of your income will come from.

So if there is an area to back off from, I have to say it is the community. I think most members try to fine-tune what works for them and their circumstances.

The great thing about this place is that is okay. I have slipped into and out of the Ambassador role several times over the years, and it really depends on other activities that come first.

I would not worry too much about the ranking thing, people get to know you and value your feedback no matter what rank you have. More important is intent.

Cheers and you really have been dealing with a lot with the fires, etc. Be safe and best of luck with the business side of things too!

Hi Deb,
This is a great question because as you build out your website you realise that something has to give and maybe the best place to take time back is from chatting in the community.

It's an awesome place for learning writing skills, perfecting social media skills and learning tips from blogs and questions.

I guess like many here I have worked out the key times to comment, and answer questions. I'm not usually verbose but I love to help.

Allocating some time in the morning and in the evening works for me. Then in the middle of the day it's all website content and management.

Balance!

Have fun

Thanks Lily. I guess I'm envious of people who have your option. Working full time doesn't really allow for that

Hi Deb,

I know exactly how you feel. I was an ambassador for almost 2 years here at WA. My rank is now 50. I let it go in the last few months since I simply didn't have time to worry about it or to be posting here every day.

I have a full time job and this is my busiest time of the year and this has been my busiest year ever. My husband and I also run a side business managing rental properties and we have had a ton of repairs and vacancies to deal with this year as well.

With my own health problems, my busy time at work where I can barely avoid working weekends and then the holidays as well, there was no way I could worry about something like my WA ranking!!

If I have any extra time (which I don't really since I should be doing bookkeeping for the buildings in the evenings, showing vacancies, cleaning etc), then I need to work on my websites. Posting to WA is like a luxury, not a necessity. I still try to follow my friends here and so many wonderful WA members but being in the top 25 isn't sustainable.

We also have freezing temperatures below zero F now and had both of our vehicles in the shop over New Year's.

New members to WA often get caught up in the rush of ranking and sharing every single day. They get so excited at the possibility of becoming an ambassador, it drives them to stay active and engaged.

The ranking system is useful in that regard because it gets people engaged and adds a game-like element to membership. However, most all of the really successful members here (who earn good money, a full-time income or more) don't worry about rank. They focus on their business. They will tell you they limit their time here so that they can focus on that first.

You are doing the right thing to focus on your own websites. I miss interacting with everyone too but I knew for the last few months I just didn't have much time for it. Now that things should slow down in the rest of my life at work and with the holidays over I hope to be a bit more active here.

That is the beauty of WA! You can go at your own pace and when you have the time you can spend more of it here if you choose. When you don't have the time that is fine too.

I remember you Jessica from the last time I was here on WA :) You are awesome to have stuck with it despite everything else that you do. I find myself feeling a little resentful at times of all the people here who are home with children or retired, then someone like you who does even more than me pipes up and I am inspired to squeeze more out of my already jam packed days. I really burnt myself out last year so this year my goal is to tread the very careful path of "doing my best", without comparison or self-judgement, or giving up on myself :)

Thanks Deb. I remember you too!

It is a challenge to juggle everything for sure. I adjudicate water use for all the large oil and gas companies here in Alaska. They need that water to run their drill sites, build ice roads, supply camps and everything else. This is the season when most of the work is being done since they build ice roads on top of the tundra in winter to avoid damaging the delicate plants in summer. By summer the ice melts away and you can't tell there was a road there. This takes many millions of gallons of water and I issue the authorizations that let them use our state's water from lakes, rivers, wells etc. as well as other projects such as natural gas production in other regions of the state. In summer there is water use as well but the last few months have been my very busiest time.

I am lucky to have this job for the State of Alaska so I stick it out for the time being. I have nice bosses and co-workers, good health insurance etc. and lots of money going into retirement (we don't get pensions anymore but 401K type accounts). I look forward to being my own boss however. My husband also works for the State and we manage a residential 6-plex that is old and needs tons of work as well as a nicer 4-plex that we own and live in (and rent out the other 3 units). Our goal is to buy a few more buildings and eventually be able to support ourselves with those and website businesses.

This all keeps me busy as well as having pets and health problems. I am on the slow track here but I am proud of my websites and that I get sales most every day on Amazon. They are small and I don't make much yet but I know I am moving in the right direction and I know once I have more time to dedicate to my websites I can make a lot more from them. It really works if you can be consistent. I got in waves where I am super productive and my ranking and sales pick up for a few months and then times when I don't work on my sites and they sit there and the ranking, traffic and sales go down.

It is wonderful to know I know how to make it work however. I just need more time to dedicate to the process. I view my websites and WA training and support as my early retirement plan!

Yes! Just a few weeks ago it was 52 degrees above zero here and this week it has been 16 below zero at night and 25 below in some areas nearby!

This is the coldest it has been in years and generally we are warmer than normal.

My husband has been working 12 hours per day at his regular job too since he fiiiiiiiinally got a new job in October just to find out his supervisor resigned the day he started and the boss had just retired! So he was dumped there to do his job and the supervisor's job with little training. He has been doing both jobs ever since but only getting paid for the lower level job of course. He has interviewed for the supervisor position and we have our fingers crossed he will get it. So, it is certainly hard for us to juggle everything lately.

I'm very sorry to hear that, Jessica! That bitter cold has to be bone-numbing, and you and your husband must also be tired already from all your various endeavors, and here I am complaining about 29 degrees and ice! That would be like a summer's day to you guys! Hang in there--hopefully things will get better soon!👍

You are awesome, I really mean that and it's amazing connecting with someone who builds ice roads (kind of), when I'm sitting in a bushfire ravage part of Australia. I hope we can acknowledge each other's steady efforts and successes in the years to come :)

I have seen so many stories and pictures of the fires. I am so sorry for all of you in Australia who have to deal with that. Fire is the most terrifying thing to me. We had a 7.1 earthquake here a year ago which was terrible but I would take the earthquakes over fire. We had wildfires this summer that were very bad and blocked out the sun with dark smoke. They shut down highways and my in-laws almost had to evacuate 3 times from 3 different fires. It was our hottest year ever here and there were hundreds of fires. Through all that however, we were never in any danger here. It is nothing compared to the fires in Australia.

Yes, we can cheer each other's slow and steady march toward success!
