Do you need Instant Gratification?

I'm Impatient

I've read that impatience is just an inability to delay gratification, and in order to have developed that capacity, it was necessary to have role models that were self disciplined, growing up. If your parents were immature narcissists, who were only interested in their own self interests, wants and desires, chances are you'll be to.

That Feeling of Not-Knowing

A persons' inability to solve any problem can be traced back to the fact that we just don't take the time, necessary to solve many of life's intellectual problems. The feeling of not knowing is so uncomfortable that I can't stay in the problem long enough to find a solution. I become impatient for the solution.

Instant Gratification

So I use the cop-out "I'm not smart enough" to make the problem disappear immediately. This offers me instant gratification to the pain of not knowing, it often leads to a more insidious tendency, of avoiding any problem altogether. This unrealistic way of looking at problems creates a narrow view of the world that over time can become a belief.

Not Smart Enough

The idea of not being smart enough all begins with the inability to delay gratification. So I never attempt difficult endeavors not because I'm not smart enough but because of my impatience for immediate gratification.

Learning a New Skill

Learning a new skill takes time and I need to resist the urge for instant gratification by focusing on what I enjoy about what I'm learning and taking pleasure in the small accomplishments and improvements. When I think of learning on-line marketing skills and techniques I have to remind myself that it's a lot like learning to play golf. I remember when I took up the game in my mid-thirties and scoring a 140 my first round. What kept me from giving up in disgust, (like so many do) was finding pleasure in the small accomplishments and successes, of just one nice shot. By constantly being aware of the joy of just being on a course, combined with the challenge of the next shot, I continued to improve slowly. Envisioning a future, where I could play with confidence. Seeing people just like me, being able to play with skill, knowing that they all began just like me.

Delay Gratification

If I could teach myself to play a game that initially looked impossible, then why can't I do other things that look impossible? The fact that I now shoot in the low 80s makes me realize that I can do anything I put my mind to, if only I'm willing to be patient, and delay gratification. With these thoughts in mind, I have the ability to learn on-line marketing, keeping focused on small triumphs and the desired picture of the future in mind.

Accept Not-Knowing

Without condemnation of perceived failures I'm able to accept not-knowing even though it's uncomfortable. When I think back about how I never thought I'd break 100 in golf or manage a crow pose in yoga, I'm reminded that learning a new skills takes patience. And learning patience has been the hardest skill I've ever had to learn.

As always, thanks for visiting. Dave

Me, too...Patience is a good learned skill, but some of us take a long time to learn it. I'm still working on it my own self. Let's hang in there and wait out our doubts. We'll figure things out.

A great reminder of the importance delayed gratification versus instant gratification. It is definitely a necessary attribute for achieving online success. Thanks for sharing.

Needing instant gratification has made my life a lot tougher then it could have been. Thanks for the comments, didn't realize anyone was reading my posts. Dave

So many people can relate to that.
