In short Yes, you are offering a service, this constitutes a form of Business.

Why you may ask?

My site is not for profit I only offer free advice or information.

Consider other community or charity services out there whether it is a soup kitchen, family assistance or a church, etc.

All of these run and operate like a business; all successful business/organisations have a plan.

When we start we do the following:

1.Identify requirements (our Niche)

2.Address the various needs, concerns and expectations of the stakeholders (Niche)

3.Build our site

4.Execute

Doing the above is basic business planning.

In the following articles I will discuss how we can develop a plan for a successful business, cover the Key Fundamental Planning Processes, and how we apply this to both profit and not for profit businesses/sites

1.Initiating Processes

2.Planning Processes

3.Executing Processes

4.Monitoring and Control Processes

Darren has worked globally Managing and Directing Mega Million Dollar Construction Projects and has run his own successful management consulting Business and is now sharing his knowledge and experience.

Thanks very helpful :) I was wondering for the longest if my site was a business. I see I have a few things to fix now.

Well done Lunaria, if you need any assistance on setting up a business for your site please PM me, I am more than happy to assist.

Thank you Darren :) I will definitely contact you when I'm ready for that step.

H Mate,
I have been running my furniture removal business for 8 years, and to be honest I have had no form of business tracing, just what I have picked up along the way.
My biggest issue is staff and actually making money from the business, and to be honest I dont even have a business plan.
Is this something You can help with?

Hi Dundon666, thanks for reading my blog.

I am more than happy to assist. I am still setting up my new site so please be paitent.

I need to have an understanding of what you want to achieve, business purpose, goals and long term business objectives etc.

A simple page plan covering the basics such as;

1) Business Profile (a short blurb about your business)
2) Market
3) Competitors
4) Operational plan (how you get things done)
5) Financial Plan (cashflow, buget, statements/records etc.)

This Plan can be as simple as one page, as you gain an understanding, you can expand it further to a full document for i.e. gatting a business loan, investors or partners.

Hope this helps, any question please ask.

a little bit of history.
We Run a small furniture removal business in Brisbane Austrlia.
We at one stage ran 5 trucks with over 20 staff, but found operating and maintain a business that size highly stressful and we actually ended up liquidating due to our largest contract that provided 85% of our work went into receivership, leaving us stranded with not enough work to meet our overheads. 3 years later we are just recovering. to be honest this period has been very draining and finding the passion again has been the hardest thing.

We now run 2 trucks after down sizing which means we offer a superior service as I am now very particular about the staff i use and send into peoples homes..
We do all same day house removals. we offer a ultra large truck for home moves and medium size truck for the small unit and small house moves.
www.1stclassmovers.com.au.

2. our market is cut throte and we compete with anything from $70 per hour for 2 men and a truck, too $180 per hour for 2 men and a truck. There are tonnes of removal companies. lots more now than when we started 8 years ago.
Our operating cost is $115 to $125 per hour.
The economy here is not flash at the moment so competing with the lower price companies is our biggest hurdle atm.

3. The bigger companies I dont find to be our main competitors because people will use them for who they are if that makes scense.
Our main competition consists of Brisk Transport, Ozy Moving, Riverbank and River City Removals, Your Local Movers and Scottie the Movers.
There are a another 50 I could also name.
The big players are Mini Movers, Wridgeways, Conways, Kents, Allied Pickfords and Grace.

4.
530 drive to yard and get trucks on the road.
6:00 write up the days before paperwork county cash and write into diary.
6.30. come home kids little ones breakfast dressed and ready for daycare, or some days stay with me and I watch them and run the office (my wife is doing placement for her course in aged care, she is over the business and is going back to work).
7:30, print and call leads that have come through over night.
(I pretty much spend 75% of the day calling leads as they come though, the rest of time is anwering emails, handling incoming calls and deal with workers in the trucks with times, bills and allocating jobs.).
3pm Organize the next day into runs and send start times for workers.
4:30 -5 pick up kids from Daycare and then the evenoing run starts with answering boys as they finish up for the day and helping with dinner, bathing and feedind kids and getting them off to bed.
Any excess paperwork gets done at night.

5.
We need to make $12500 per week to cover Tax and Gst, Fuel and Wages and all our general running costs, including insurances, trucks and car loans (which I got in the business which I should not have done).
ATM Im averaging around 9000 to 11000 so times are a bit tough.
Plus im having trouble finding the experienced truck drivers I require as they do a couple of days find the work to hard and then quit to find a cushier job that then results in me going out in the truck and everything in section 4 goes out the window as i have to then do removals for the day, and miss out on booking work which then affects our cash flow...

I'm contemplating doing my cert 4 in Transport which then allows me too train staff up.

Thanks Dundon666, I will reply with a private message.

thanks mate
