Twenty Years Ago
Hi Everyone...
A short post (really) today...
Veteran's Day...
"Twenty -five years of my life I served, countless memories, good and bad...Twenty years ago I took off my boots for the final time and threw them over a telephone line...Bottom line: I came home alive, again and again...Too many have not...I salute all who sacrificed, especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice...💜💜💜" Dave Sweney, USA Sergeant Major, Retired
Those boots cost $100 too, but I was never so happy to throw away $100 in my life! :)
I am sure many of you know of the sacrifice that those who serve make for their countries...
You can argue over the reasons, and argue over the why, but those who serve ask none of these questions...
They just do what they are trained to do, honorably as they have been taught...
This is a day when we thank them for that...
Cheers!

Dave,
Thank you for your service. I have the upmost respect for those who've put their lives on the line to safeguard our liberties. I attended a ceremony today honoring our veterans this morning in Santa Barbara, CA (where I just moved) and it was really moving.

Hi, Erica...
Nice place to live and also nice to hear that they are honoring the vets today there...Less than 1% serve these days, and it can be easy to blow off the day as an extra day off...
Cheers!

Poignant post that is so true, Dave! I appreciate your military service!
Jeff
PS Minnesota put one on Dallas, just like I suspected they would!
Thanks Jeff...THAT was a great game... We did our best to blow it... Somehow got out of there with a W... Dallas is good! 👍
Hi, Anthony...
So good to have you pop through! I hope you are well and that things are going good for you...
Yes, this is a day where I give some time to those who have no more time...
As I get older, more of the comrades are passing on...I guess getting older will do that...
The alternative is not good either though...
Cheers!

Hi, KyleAnn...
Thanks...Yes, it was a symbolic thing at the time, not sure if it is still being done...
It was kinda weird figuring out what to wear to work every day...It was pretty simple prior to the boot tossing thing!
Cheers!

Yes, I had one brother who was a submariner (pronounced "sub-mare-in-air..." - I was corrected on this quite a few times by my brother hehe)...Those folks big respect for as well! Cheers! Dave : )
Thanks also, John...I have the greatest respect for the ones who go out there and do the things most people will not do...Cheers! Dave : )

Good Morning Dave,
This reminds me of the stories my Mother told me. She, her brother and parents lived through the German occupation in Holland. After the terrible hunger winter of 1944 where she cooked tulip bulb soup and the few still open restaurants would have, only for a short period, roof rabbit on the menu, Holland was liberated. British, Canadian, and American soldiers came to put an end to this horror.
My Father fought the Japanese and my German grandmother survived a Japanese concentration camp.
After the war, my parents met and that is why I am here. If not for the sacrifice of many that would not have happened.
I do hope that the human race will come to the understanding that to advance we need love, not destruction.

Hi, Taetske...
That is quite a story, very touching and moving...What that generation had to get through most of us can not even fathom. I am so grateful for all their sacrifices and sorry for their losses...
I am with you on the need to end this constant state of war that we seem to not be able to escape. You would think that humanity would learn, but they do not (at least the leaders do not)...
That your father and mother met after all that is really a wonder, and what a beautiful outcome that delivered (you!)...Big shoes for the likes of me to fill, and now it is too late, my day in the sun is pretty much over hehe...
All we can do is do the best possible, and hope that through our actions the next generations will one day say, "I remember when XXXX did XXXX to save the planet and humanity from the madness..."
Cheers!

Wooh, that was a beautiful tear jerking story, I have tears in my eyes as I am writing. So incredibly moving and poignant as well.
Thank you for sharing.. ❤️
Good Morning Dave,
I am blushing, that was sweet of you.
No more sunny days for you? I thought you were younger than I am. Let us not forget that our stay here is just an interlude and a small part of the big journey.
All the best, Taetske
It was of course not my intention to make you cry Cordelia but happy the little story touched you. Crying is good as it washes the soul.
