I am currently building a membership site that is focusing on e-commerce plus other services...One element of that site is training for would-be marketers wanting to build out e-commerce opportunities.

After being in the 'biz' a couple of years now, which is not a lifetime, but certainly long enough to make some observations, I have decided on some core competencies that need to be included in the training offered.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

What would be helpful to me now is to see what others here think about these subjects and also to get some feedback and input on any subjects that may have been left off my list...

Because we have such a robust training program here with the Wealthy Affiliate platform, you may ask why I don't just copy what is provided here (subjects, not material!)?

Well, let me answer this...

A FRESH LOOK

The reason I am taking a fresh look and approach is that I think it will add value for the member over and above what they get here and with a focus on the competencies needed for e-commerce success...

There are many overlapping things between the two market segments, but anomolies with each that are important to success...So have a look and tell me what you think and what is missing in the comments please...

CORE COMPETENCIES FOR ONLINE MARKETERS

(1) WordPress skills

(2) AutoResponder skills

(5) Adding such pages to your domain using FTP or with a cPanel

(9) Tracking on-site visitor actions

(10) SEO for e-commerce

(22) Building your brand

OK, this is a start...

YOUR INPUT IS NEEDED!

Please tell me what I have left out...Affiliate marketing is similar as you see from the above topics, and when you look at the list as laid out above it is not surprising that people do have a learning curve normally when starting to seeing results...

The training required represents a significant amount of investment on the marketer's side first to attain these skills, then having the ability combine these into building a viable business using a disciplined work schedule and systems that keep everything moving forward and focused...

In this regard, all businesses are the same...

I appreciate your input ahead of time, I am sure there is more that I need to include in my training platform!

Cheers!

You have a great list. You could put in beating existing controls under copywriting. Training can be focused from many approaches. I haven't seen one as good for the marketing perspective!

Thanks, Mike...What do you mean by beating copywriting controls? Yes we are looking at training from some cutting edge perspectives and look forward to putting together the most effective training for e-commerce on the market! Cheers! Dave : )

Marketers are always looking for a "new improved" version of a current sales letter (the control) The idea being to recharge traffic from the constant effects of jadedness!

Ahhh OK, now I understand...Yes, you are right...The market suffers from banner fatigue (or sales page fatigue) over a period of time so change is good...That is a great point! Thanks,...

I would agree that they are quite comprehensive...but when you use the word "competencies" it implies that there are or is a scale of achievement level which must be reached...do you plan to add that? Because what we have here is a very good listing of expected abilities...just a thought...

Good point...I guess some sort of test could be designed for courses, but hard to measure if not conducted in person and proctored...

Maybe adding in a requirement to submit some sort of a paper/case study demonstrating competence could be added at the higher levels of training,

I think most people would balk at this since what they will have (a certificate?) is not from accredited institution...The self-study system was used for years in the Army as an ancillary program...

It was the called the ACCP if I remember correctly...Essentially there were a number of subjects that you could sign up for and receive a big pile of booklets...

As you worked through each, you took the tests that were at the end, sent in this and they were graded and you received credit that was a factor for promotions and leadership positions...

Over time, this program went away, but for years I kept some of the really good courses because they were filled with information. Later I did throw them since the information became dated...

I may do this...

Perhaps adding a checklist as to what "competency" denotes would suffice, and it would be up to the member to make sure they understand everything that is included in the list...

It would be a self-grading thing and a useful and quick way to get back to the training they may later find they are lacking as they get into real-life online e-commerce marketing in a serious way...

Thanks for your input it was very helpful!

Cheers!

This is quite a comprehensive list already Dave. Pretty awesome.
How about coding skills and competencies, such as CSS, HTML, etc...?

Sure I might be able to think of others given more time.

That is a good addition to training...There are some free sites that we can refer members to that will help on this...Thanks! Cheers and great weekend...Hard Rock was great last night BTW! I did my first ever FB Live session, and the band were the stars!
