Can You Afford Amazon Web Services & What Is It Anyway?

Hi Everyone...

We just got in the latest monthly bill from Amazon for using their services. We store content from our websites (many) on buckets that we created within our Amazon Web Services (AWS) account, the total space we are 'renting' is likely now reaching 1TB...

The content we store there is either a back up of hard drive data from our various drives or it is data that we position there and pull down as we may need for the websites. This includes images, video files, and pages...

So how expensive is using Amazon Web Services?

Here is a copy of the latest email bill we received:

Why am I adding this here?

The reason is that many members do not know about AWS. The service offers a a number of products for you depending on your needs. Know it can be complicated to set up and then work it within the AWS site to get set up.

From my experiences to now, the benefits are well worth your time. We love AWS!

The first year actually will cost you nothing unless you go over a certain level of use/storage (we paid nothing during that year)...As you can see, beyond that point you also cannot beat the price.

How Can You Use This In Your Online Marketing Business?

There are a number of ways it can help you. If you are selling products, you can store downloads there for the buyers, you can store images, you can back up business files, back ups for videos you have published on YouTube or elsewhere, etc.

How do you get access to these services? Do a simple Google search for 'Amazon Web Services' and go to their sales page. There you can get details on how to sign up (it is free) and also you will learn the details on the year of free access, etc...

Conclusion

If you are looking at a place to store data, to set up downloads or pages, or a number of other online related tasks, check AWS out. It is free to start with for a year, and almost free after that (see the 'bill')!

Cheers!

44 cents! Incredible.

Yes, that seems...Unreal? But this is typical, no bill has been what I would consider 'high' and this is but one reason I like them...Reliability is important too, and they are that! Cheers! Dave : )

AWS a great cost effective service Dave. Definitely I would use it.

However, if you have 1 TB of data, I would still store an additional backup of that data on an external hard drive I keep around, simply because there is always the possibility of a major hacking, similar to what happened with Yahoo.

Yes, Kaju, we have 2 systems in place for complete backups in addition to the hard drives on site...

I went through some changes years ago that taught me to do this...

My partner thinks I go a little overboard but lose data one time, as I did, then you will know...

Backups for the backups are essential...It is important to have a system where you can also go back in time too...

There have been instances when I needed to get a picture of where we were at a certain date and I had a copy of that too...

Cheers!

Absolutely essential. You know Dave firsthand from the experience of hard knocks never again will I lose data.
Stay on it brother.

Roger that!

BTW - Did you see that Sheila E. is doing some good things with some fellow musos lately?

Yesterday she posted a pic of her and I think Ringo Starr together doing some recording...

Cool stuff and for a worthy cause...

Purple forever here (think Minnesota Vikings, Prince, Sheila E, etc.)

Dave : )

Thant's great, didn't know that! Been too involved with trying to make more money lately.

Purple all the way (I'm a big Prince fan of course!). I will check that out. Thanks Dave!

New information for me. There is just do much information and services help us. Thanks for sharing. Debbie

Hi, Debbie...

Yes, I like to share with others here as many do, especially when it can help us for our general online marketing businesses.

This is a really important benefit of being a member of Wealthy Affiliate - literally a clearing house for what is going on in the market...

Wealthy Affiliate is a must-have resource for all serious online marketers, I think!

Cheers!

Thanks for sharing this Dave. Anything FREE is good for us just starting out. I will definitely try and put this to use.

Great, Craig! I have to say this was a most pleasant surprise getting this in the mail today hehe! Cheers! Dave : )

I started using Amazon S3 a few months ago to store backups. It's good to know it's not going to cost a fortune after the first year is up.

You will not break the bank using them, that is for sure hehe! Cheers! Dave : )

You're right. Compared to other services it's prices are extremely low. Use it for storing Ebooks and websites.

Yes, Eric...I am finding more and more uses for the tool, and if I wanted to at some point they can do many other things...They are there for you as your business grows...They work with some of the biggest companies on the planet, yet still will help the likes of our small operation hehe...I like that! Cheers! Dave : )

I didn't know about AWS but after reading this I'm going to look into it. Thanks for sharing Dave.

Thanks for sharing Dave.

Great information to know and as you said a wonderful price :)

Great Brendan! Tuck this away for future use if you cannot use it now...With work and time, you will need it at some not too distant point in the future! Cheers! Dave : )

Once you ge started it should be workable!

Yes, Mike...

That is the problem for many I think...Once they see that page you go to AFTER signing up, you think "Holy Cow" and click away hehe...

Cheers!

Hi Dave, thanks for the confirmation that AWS is a good service at a good price. I've noticed many internet marketers using them.

I haven't signed up yet but I have looked at their Sales & FAQ pages several times & am totally confused by it all. All these services - No idea what they're talking about.

You say " Know it can be complicated to set up and then work within the AWS site to get set up." How did you figure it all out? Did you find some outside 'plain english' resource to understand it all?

Where does one start? Is it simply a question of signing up for their free tier & then going from there?

Can you tell how confused I am ;)

Hallo. Brigitte...

Because of the wide number of services that they offer, that page you go to when signing up is VERY intimidating for sure!

Initially, I used it for a video hosting site, knowing that my YouTube account could be shut down without notice...

I needed a place that I had control of, where this could not happen. AWS was recommended, and I slogged my way through to get started...

There are some training videos and likely tutorials you can find using Google search to help you through that initial AWS maze...

Actually, because of my experience, I created some myself. It is a paid training, but not a high-cost thing.

No need for that, I would go with the free training hehe!

It is as simple as signing up, yes...I believe we also had to add a credit card (the monthly cost will be charged to that card), but for the first year, nothing...

Our most expensive month has been I believe around $3.00! Really? That is nothing in this online marketing world!

If you have problems getting started, let me know here. Perhaps I can help you get through it...

Maybe I should do a free training on the sign-up and the setup process here?

Cheers!

Hi Dave

Your reasons for using AWS are pretty much similar to mine. One main one that I want is to be able to give a customer a secure protected link for them to download their customised digital order, mainly videos. Also for them to upload their images. Would you know if I can do that with AWS?

I see in your reply to Gordon that you also use Dropbox. I have heard that Dropbox is not that great for videos, but great for sharing other protected documents. How do you find it?

I have googled for training on using AWS, but keep coming up with loads of results full of non-comprehensible tech speak. Surely I don't need to become a techie to use their services! Although I have used several different search terms - I'm still obviously using the wrong ones, haven't come across your training yet.

I like the sound of your training idea for here of how to sign up & the setup process.

Many thanks for your help :)
Brigitte
