About DaveStarr
Joined November 2011
I'm a US-born American, slightly older than the Baby Boomer generation (born in 1945). I've been earning and dabbling in earning online for many years now, and I have finally decided to get serious about earning.

I encourage all folks my age or near it to get serious also, I refuse to spend my latter years worrying and scrabbling to make ends meet as inflation gobbles up what was supposed to be a secure retirement.

In addition to empowering retirement with extra earnings (not penny-pinching), I have interest and a lot of experience with living outside the USA. I've lived in 8 countries total and presently reside in the Philippines where I live well and invest the money I save by not paying US prices.

Hi Dave, I'm following you because we have some common interests and you are living proof that WA works. I am hoping to use this business as a means to live comfortably in retirement, live or visit in any country until I have the urge to go to another, and I love the Philippines. Lived there for 3 years back in the 80s and go back a couple of times a year ever since. One day I hope to have a little place there along the water.

Well, you certainly can do that Brian. If you can put up with many of the unique aspects of life there it's a great place for Americans to live. And if you earn online there is no problem with work permits and such stuff because you are not "working" in the Philippines.

And, if you live overseas you can legally exclude over $100k of "Earned Income" from your US taxes (always subject to US tax, though).

As a former US military, you can get a lifetime permanent residency visa in the Philippines very reasonably. It's not paradise, but I'm in my 14th year there now and it hasn't driven me away yet ;-).

Thanks for the kind words, Eddie. And by the way, don't worry about the "head start" idea, I've been around a heck of a lot of years and done very little compared to many I know and see every day.

You just focus on "Eddie" and don't compare yourself to anyone else, you'll be surprised how far you'll go and how fast, too.

Be well

smben69mt@hotmail.com I like where you have your head at y starting a web page for young pilots because of your age You have me beat 1951 baby here Thank you I am having some difficulty writing about flying and my experience but I think I am getting an edge. Maybe just start telling my story and the fun it was and the fear it created. thanks Maybe down the WA road to success I can see the Phillipines too

Who knows, maybe that will come to pass sooner than you think. The Philippines is a great place to live a LOT cheaper than in the USA. I'm in Florida for a few weeks visit right now. I came here thinking seriously I might move back to the USA, but after dipping my toe in the water here have decided "no way", I'm on my way back to my little home in the Philippines on 4 November.

Thanks for the follow Dave and living outside the US is just what the doctor ordered. I bought a condo in Kiev last summer. Cost of living is 75% cheaper and it is the most amazing country i have ever visited. It reminds me of Mayberry and Andy Griffith. lol Best of luck to you.

Yes, I've been in the Philippines for 12 years now, full-time and probably will be for life. I am currently visiting family in Florida for a couple weeks. There are some things which make me think about moving back at times, but when you really look into what's required, there's no question ... I'm on my way back to my little Pacific Paradise real soon now (4 November, actually).

I could(and may do it some day) write a book about how much better living abroad can be. America is the WORST country in the world to do the ex-pat thing.
Reply
DaveStarr Premium
You should write it. I must say that although I love my country (I served in the military 38 years), I don't like living there any longer.

Hi Dave,

Although I appreciate the advice I completely and could not disagree with your business philosophic outlook..

Over the years I have learnt that by keeping your portfolio diverse helps prevent total failure on any slight swing in a certain market.

When putting all your eggs in one nest so to speak if that market spirals so does your investment with it. Where as by keep diverse the whole economy would need to falter to wipe out your eggs.

Whatever you say is right for you. I was merely pointing out the largest single cause of failure I have seen in the online world over the past 10 or 12 years that I have been a part of it.

But hey, whatever works for you, more power to you.

In my 15 -18 year of online marketing I have seen a simple Google algorithm change completely wipe out individual website owners. Actually just about every algorithm change I have expercienced while I have been involved in online entrepreneurship has caused friends of mine to give up and go back to working a typical 9 to 5.

While those of us that had multiple websites in different niches and business model structures survived the shift by Google much easier and was able to stay in business because of our diversity.

That is what I was trying to point out.

I do however agree that if you expand too widely as you stated causing you to become tot thin to properly operate any of the multiple websites that could be very problematic indeed.

Hello Dave, thanks for following me. Which other countries have you lived in? We always hear about Belize, Panama and countries in South America such as Ecuador and Columbia as good, affordable places for Americans to retire. I would love to hear from an American who actually lived in these places and see what they thought!

Jessica,

I've lived in England, Germany, Thailand (2 years), Japan (3 years) and the Philippines, almost finished with my 12th year here. I should write a blog regarding your question. I have no experience in Central or South America.

If I did decide to head that way, Panama would be my first place to check out, mainly because they use the US Dollar. Currency conversion hassles are a pain n every other country.

They are also on the same day and time as much of the USA. Living on the other side of the dateline can be a big nuisance too.

But all those countries speak Spanish, I don't and I'm not inclined to learn. In the Philippines, English is one of the official languages and I get by here just fine on English.

The Philippines also has what is probably the easiest and most flexible programs for visas for foreigners to stay ... basically as long as one cares to.

But every one of us is different and what's great for one is not so good for another.

Best regards.

Thank you Dave. That is so interesting! I would love to read what you write if you do a more extensive post sometime!

Which was your favorite? Was it easier in England and Germany than the others?
Reply
DaveStarr Premium
England and Germany "easy". Not likely in any way. Too many rues, too much of a "nanny" society, and strangely enough I had more issues with language in the UK than in any other country. You may have heard that many years ago Churchill described the UK and the USA a "Two countries separated by a common language,"

It's true ;-)

Swangirl Premium
Ah, yes. My husband is a Churchill buff (he was a history major), I am sure he remembers that.

That is why I asked...I wondered if it was not as easy as one would expect!

Hello, fellow ex-pat, Dave! Thanks for your follow and we follow you back.
So great to connect with you. We have also lived and worked in many countries and finally have settled upon Ecuador. We are here on the beautiful coast. The Philippines is a place we would love to visit and dive. The people there are so lovely. We worked with many of them in the dive business on Palau in Micronesia.
Isn't it great that we can work online from anywhere in the world that has a connection?
Now, you have been here a long time! How are things going? In your profile photo it looks like you are holding up a product with your name on it. We would love to know more. You are inspiring us already as we are all from the same age group and yes, we need and must make more income, even though the cost of living is less down here in South America.
Best of luck to you and we shall be following you with great interest.

No, the product I am holding is just related to me by name. My wife snapped the picture in a supermarket for fun. You can't see it clearly but the company uses a little old professor logo who looks a lot like me. Gives me a chuckle every time we shop. Be well.

Thank you Dave ... not much done on my part, it's an old, long-indexed site that I am moving here to WA, haven't even posted any articles yet, but every step moves me closer. So far I find the site management/site setup system here second to none. I've put up a LOT of sites on a LOT of different hosting services and no one comes close to the way WA does it in ease and speed.

I hope things are going well. I know you are getting rolling within the training and there is ONE thing that always tends to confuse people and that is "what is my niche?".

I know, same thing happened to me when I started.

I just wanted to reach out and let you know that I am here if you ever want to run any niche "ideas" by me or you have any questions about finding your niche.

Get back to me when you get the chance! :)
