Your Domain Name Has To Relate To Your Niche - Or Does It?

If you spend any amount of time in Chat which I keep finding myself doing, I often see newbies asking if their chosen domain name is ok for their niche.

What I’ve learned since I’ve been here, which in hindsight has been blatantly obvious for years, is that it has no bearing at all.

I’ll explain........

Most of us who are promoting WA will have “Online” or Money” somewhere in the domain, I have too, that’s fine. You can use anything you want as no one will be looking for your website via your domain name because nobody know you. Everyone who lands on your site via a search engine will arrive via some type of content you’ve put out there which is why people here keep banging on about “Content in King” which is absolutely right.

Here’s a few ideas of well known sites that do not relate to their niche, starting with:

www.amazon.com - I don’t think the CEO has ever considered offering boat trips down the river or promoting anything to do with the river

www.apple.com - Fruit and Veg stall / Supermarket ?

www.ebay.com - What does this mean then? Electronic something ?

www.virgin.com - I’m not going there with this one……

www.fedex.com - Federal Express actually means - Government Department and Fast! However, look at the 2nd (E) and the Left part of the X on the logo - Can you see the arrow pointing to the right? Clever trick right?

This is just a few but there must be hundreds like this, so when you’re considering your domain name and your niche, don’t get too hung up on the name.

Leave a comment below if you can think of any more, it would be interesting to see how many we can all come up with

Hi Dave,
thanks for this topiic. From the examples you gave "branding" is more important than having a known key word in your title.

I have a brand name for my guitar site but have keywords in the pages and posts. Some of the pages are ranked on page 1 and 2.
This helps bring some traffic but is also establishing the brand.

Marty

Is this really essential Dave or should you be posting your unique brand on your site instead?

Dave, very timely post. How did you know I was hung up on the name. You have helped me over a hump. This is just one of the reasons I love WA so much and this is why I know I will be successful at this work. Bobby

yahoo.com

Good one

Great post, Dave. I have the Diabetic website. I call work with Roger Bohn.

google.com - google is now a word.

Yes, and part of every day dialogue now. I'll google it!

Hi Dave, great post!

How about www.nike.com (Nike: Greek goddess of victory).
Victory has to do with sport, but still...

www.head,com (we know what "Head" means; part of the tennis racquet with the string is known as well Head, but again ...).

www.mcdonalds.com ... (already a huge, established brand, as we know, but the domain name has "a little" to do with burger as a product ...maybe would my burger, or mac hamburger or mc fries remind more on the product itself ...)

etc...

Br.

Yes, Actually McDonald's refers to the McDonalds brothers, the people who founded it but it was Ray Kroc that developed it to what it is today.

I wonder if we'll get 100 examples

Great thoughts and information.
It makes perfect sense with what you have stated.
Many thanks for sharing,
Cheers, Tosh :)

Glad you like it Tosh, feel free to add to it.

True! :)
