The Royal Visit To Chichester, West Sussex

For those of you, who might just have missed this, today the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, AKA Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, paid their first ever visit to Sussex and started their visit in Chichester. Chichester is the town I live in and where they were starting their visit, was around a 30 minute walk for me, but on a nice day like today, it was a good day for a walk : )

They were visiting Edes House, which is right in the centre of Town and were due there at around midday. I arrived at about 11am, to find as you would expect, a heavy but generally happy crowd, well policed, by some of my ex colleagues and reminding me of why I left the Police years ago : ) I know which side of the fence I prefer.

I was standing a few feet away from the Royal Car, but sadly for me, didn't get to see the couple, as they left the visit, simply because it was well policed.

I also managed to get interviewed by BBC Radio Sussex, because unbeknown to me, I was standing right next to their delightful chappy, Steve, who thrust a microphone under my nose, introduced himself and asked me for my thoughts on the visit FAME!... ALBEIT via radio : )

The visit ended at around 11.30ish and so I made my way back to our gorgeous lakeside lodge, where we (my lovely wife and myself, plus Charlie the cat) live

Then about 15 minutes later, as I was walking over a bridge, which has a railiway line underneath, a Police Motor cyclist, went speeding past on blue lights and over the bridge, my initial thought was, there must be an accident at the roundabout, as there are always driving incidents there...

Then... Another Police MotorCyclist, came roaring up beside me on Blue lights and Stopped!

WOW... Its not me is it, what have I done?... He then gestured to the traffic on my side and to the traffic on the other side of the road behind him to STOP and wait

What could be happening?... Uhhh, I thought

At that precise point I looked further back down the road and saw...

The ROYAL Motorcade, heading along the road, led by the Duke and Duchesses car at the front, they were going to go right past me and so, seizing the moment, throught...

"I'm having some of this"

Turning from a 55 year old, steady chap, into a child like 15 year old boy and waved very enthusiastically at the car ,as it approached and then passed me, as it did so, for a brief fleeting moment, had both Harry and Meghan, both wave back at me standing their grinning like a little boy in a candy store, as they carried on

I dread to think what their conversation was like, but BOY did it make me feel excited and pleased. I have never seen Royalty that close, even when I was in the Police and assigned royal duties, so it was quite something else!

After they had gone, I phone my wife, text my wife, text her daughter, phoned my brother and for the next hour was on cloud 9

What a day and one I shall never forget.

A story I just had to share

Your story made me smile, I needed that! Thanks for sharing your experience. Even though I live in the U.S., I'd have felt the same as you, what fun!

It was, really fun, thanks for commenting

Wow! I know that had to be really exciting to experience. There Are moments like that, that brings about the Joy in one's Heart as if you were a kid on Christmas Morning.

Fantastic, it was great that you made the most of a once in a lifetime opportunity. I am not a big fan of the royals but I think I would have reacted the same in that situation, thanks for sharing.

How absolutely wonderful. I love our Royal family again after a brief hiatus after Princess Diana’s death. Her sons and their wives have done her proud though I will be upset if Charles and Camilla become King and Queen.
For me it should pass to William and Kate...end of.
I was honoured as a young teenager to see the Queen close up on a walkabout. I never forgot her Grace and beauty. She was perfection personified but I certainly was not brought up by a royalist family... far from it infact.
With Grace and Gratitude

Thanks Candice, my wife was equally thrilled NOT when she came home!! as she had to work and so missed the day

Too bad for her, but I think it was just "meant" to be your day :)

Wow, Dave! Fabulous day.

Totally surreal but fun and with eye contact too, from both and direct to me, because where I was standing, no one else was there : )

That's what made it doubly special!

Absolutely, one thing that struck me, is how tiny she is compared to Prince Harry, who being a typical ex serviceman, was very upright even in his sitting posistion.

Interesting observation. It must be more obvious in person than on TV.

Yeah I guess so, I mean she was tiny, whereas Harry was very prominent on the other side, but they quite clearly get on well together, though god knows what they would have made of bognor, where they were headed, though in fairness to a unit on the outskirts of town, because Bognor Regis, is a dump compared to most seaside towns, but hey ho, a good day anyway

Thanks for commenting

You're welcome. Something to tell your grandchildren, for sure!

Oh it was for sure... unforgetable, thanks for commenting

Yes... real time is always better than delayed television

What a day!
Once in a lifetime
