When Fear Ruins Your Dreams

I’ve just listened to Stairway to Heaven on the radio and what a fantastic song. It brings back memories of the 1970s certainly. They were some really wild years, but I also remember a friend of mine, Simon.

He was a number one fan of the rock group Led Zeppelin and especially their lead singer – Robert Plant. If we were driving to a job together and Led Zep came on the radio it was turned up to full volume and Simon would sing along – except he couldn’t sing; but hey-ho, that is life.

Not only was Simon a fan of Robert Plant, he also had the surname of Plant – Simon Plant. How big a fan was he, well he named his son after him – Robert Plant. He said there was never going to be any other name for him.

How did I know Simon, our kids went to the same Steiner school and so did Robert Plant’s. What a coincidence and what an opportunity for Simon to meet his rock hero. But he never did.

Like most schools they celebrated all the festivals throughout the year – Easter, Christmas, Halloween, Harvest time, Nativity plays and a host of others. Being an electrical engineer I was always “volunteered” to help with the setting up of the stage and lighting by my now ex-wife (that’s not why we divorced). And guess what, Robert Plant the rock star always turned up to every festival at the school. It was not uncommon to be sat next to him in the refreshment area or to hear him quietly singing along to the music.

And so to the point of all this.

My friend always wanted to meet his hero and he knew that this Rock Legend always went to the school festivals, I told him. But would he go to the festivals himself and almost certainly come into contact with him. Not at all, he always had a reason not to go. I would ask him why he didn’t go to the school events, after all it was only a 3 mile drive. His reply every time – “I wouldn’t know what to say to him”.

Fear of not being able to say anything was preventing him from achieving one of his life goals, to meet Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin. Every time he could be within touching distance of his dream, fear turned him back and he never did meet him.

And I knew a few others who let their fears stop them achieving their dreams. One colleague always wanted a church wedding and to be taken to the church in a horse and carriage but she was frightened of people looking at her; so she settled for an incognito register office wedding instead. And a neighbour who always wanted to go travelling but worried that he might not like the food or that the locals wouldn’t understand his English.

My message then, is not to hold back on achieving your dreams and goals. Don’t do 95% of the work, the late nights, the research and the effort and then stop because you worry what people will think when you publish an article. Putting it off until next week is not the thing to do. Set your timetable and stick to it. As someone once said, publish and be damned. That is true of us here at WA; publish and damn the fear. There are only so many “finishing touches” you can make, there are only so many “not the right times” that you can use. Most people will like your post and all those fears of looking silly and recieving bad comments will come to nothing. There will be more pluses than negatives.

And Robert Plants goal. From the age of 10 years he always dreamed of being a famous singer like Elvis Presley.

So go on, go and put on Stairway to Heaven, it’s on YouTube, and then start climbing your own stairway to your own goals.

Enjoy the weekend

FEAR= F alse E vidence, A ppearing , R eal. I remember when I had a chance to sit down and have coffee with Ted Nugent for an hour. We talked about all kinds of music stuff and players he has played with. I brought a picture of the guitars i had at the time for him to autograph. He looked at the picture and nearly begged me to sell him my 1990 blue Jackson. I told him absolutely not, with his money he could custom order one. lol. Fear can stop people in their tracks. that is when we have to press through with all the courage we can muster. Usually that is when it turns out the best.

Thanks for the super comment Mike.

Hi Bux. Thank you for a motivational post.
What a shame your friend never got to realize his dream.

Fear can indeed ruin your dreams, if you let it. But once you face it and conquer it, you'll do it again and again. I speak from personal experience.

The first time you may fumble, stumble and make a fool of yourself. The second time will be a little bit better. From then on you can only get better. And before you know it, you're unstoppable.

Here in WA we have to learn to “publish and damn the fear”, as you say.

Thank you T. Keep going forwards my friend.

Ahh, some friends are just... Well, stairway to heaven brings back memories, so weird I have actually been listening to some late 70s and 80s songs this week, although I think stairway was earlier, right?

Anyway, fear of failure, of the unknown, etc. etc.- it is partly why the world is where it is. We waste so many opportunities without ever trying, great post, Bux.

Enjoy the weekend!!!

Very early 70s Chris. Thanks for the great reply.
