George Eliot was the author of the above quote and what a life she had.

Born Mary Ann Evans she was already well known in the literary world when she started writing novels. Wanting the novels to stand on their own merit she used the pen-name George Eliot for The Mill on the Floss, Middlemarch and several others.

I suppose it’s only like you and I having two or three email addresses (What! You don’t).

During the American Civil War, she strongly expressed her support of the Unionist forces, then she turned her attention to the Irish independence cause and she also strongly voiced her belief in equality for women.

What a turbulent life she had, she lived with her lover for nearly thirty years but they never married, they couldn’t, he was already married.

This was a big no-no in Victorian England in the 1800s and this caused a massive rift in their family. Her brother never spoke to her for all that time. She had several children with her lover and on his death she married a long-time acquaintance. But this was also controversial, he was more than twenty years her junior.

That didn’t start off right either, they went to Europe for a honeymoon and her husband jumped out of the hotel bedroom window into the Venice canals and tried to drown himself. He didn’t, but just 7 months later, just before Christmas she died of kidney failure.

As a life-long doubter of Christianity, she was not allowed to be buried in the main part of Highgate Cemetery; but instead buried in a quarter of the grounds reserved for political and religious dissenters and agnostics. She was, however buried next to her lover, the man she had shared a bed with for most of her life and close to the grave of her good friend Karl Marx.

We can all learn from her full on attitude to life, always doing something, always being involved, always watching and learning. She would have made a great member here at WA.

What a life. Lived to the full until her death.

Now get up and live yours.

Hi Bux
An inspiring story.
I knew George Eliot was the pen name of a woman but didn’t know the rest of the story. Thank you.
:-)
Richard

She was a tryer Richard. Smiling in the face of adversity.
Just like we should.
I find her novels heavy going, but the way she describes things is second to none.
Enjoy the day my friend

She was a brave woman.

Myra

Yes, some people are just so inspirational.

Made a pact with myself
No regrets
No resentments
No looking back

Absolutely right S. The only life you have is the one you are living right now.
Was this another medal opportunity.
Have a great day Simone.
Dave.

Lol
Enjoy your awesome day

Wow! What a colourful life & fiesty woman by the sounds bux.
She would have made a great addition here to WA.

She certainly was a fighter. In the 1800s women were supposed to be quiet and in the background. Bravo to her, she showed them a thing or two. Anyone can make it with determination.
