You Cant Be Good At Everything

I’ve read a number of posts in the last few days where people have talked about feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of new skills they need to learn to start their own online business here at wealthy affiliate.

It‘s true that there is definitely a lot of skills required to create a website which is professional in appearance and contains content that engages a visitor and ultimately gets them buying via your link.

However I think many people overestimate how good it needs to be or how difficult it will actually be. With the technology available today it is relatively straightforward to create a website using Wordpress and a suitable theme. Remember you aren’t trying to create a new Ebay or Amazon. It just has to be good enough to serve your purpose.

Once you have learned the basics of creating your business and you can create posts and pages for your site then you already know all the technology you need.

It’s then time to focus on getting really good at just one skill. In our business I would suggest that should be one of two things. Either be great at making videos or be great at writing content.

To make videos requires a whole new set of skills and technologies but if you can do this then you will do great.

Personally I recommend that you focus your time on becoming a great writer. Learning to write great content is probably the core skill in creating an affiliate marketing business - not web page design, graphics or anything else.

Why is it important to be great at one thing rather than quite good at lots of things?

Look at it this way...

If your car had a problem with a clutch for example would you take it to a tyre store which sells tyres and does some general mechanical work? Or would you take it to a specialist mechanic who deals with specific mechanical problems.

Or if you had a problem with your heart would you be happy to just be seen by a general practitioner who deals with a wide spectrum of medical problems? I reckon you’d probably rather see a cardiologist who is a specialist in heart disease.

Many of the most successful people in the world are people who specialise in one skill rather than people who are all-rounders.

That’s why I believe to build a successful online business you should be able to do general stuff “good enough”and then focus all your time on learning the core skill.

Totally agree. Thanks for the great advice Dave.

Thanks Mickey, you’re welcome 😊

I totally agree with you Dave.
In the online world, it's good to be Jack of all trade but you have to master "one."

Thanks for sharing this good point.

Cinderella

Thanks Cinderella. Yes it’s important to concentrate on mastering the skills that will help you be successful online

You make a good point Dave.

Derek

Thanks Derek. I appreciate the feedback

You are right, David.
That is why we are taught to start with a niche that we are passionate about at WA, something that we are good at.
Thanks for sharing, David.

Very good point. Its always easier to build a business around a topic you are passionate about

I agree, Dave. Sometimes it's good to step back and recognize what is the one thing to focus on to continue making progress with an online business. Otherwise it is is easy to feel overwhelmed attempting to master a variety of skills at one time. Thanks for sharing!

Totally agree with everything you said. There is much to learn but it can be done if you focus on the important stuff.

Amen Dave!

Another great actionable advice filled post.

This is the trap so many fall into, trying to juggle so many minute details until, as it can easy to predict way in advance, one would reach burnout point where creativity will not flow from a burdened soul and mind.

Ironically, the "pain points" we are to fix for others get now transferred onto us, by our own miscalculated options.

Instead of trying to market to doctors, we will now need to go see many doctors.

Instead of marketing to couples in the space of relationships, we now succumb to the inevitable strained relationships in our own family and circle of friends.

Instead of advising others on wealth and personal development, we will now be the ones to seek ways to fund our ill advised actions, which we ironically call marketing strategies.

Outsource.

Out smart the competition.

Out sell the niche.

Blessings!

Yes indeed. Outsourcing is definitely something to be considered although i always like to try everything myself at least once to get a feel for what's involved
