The Enthusiasm Killer!

Over the past few days I have been suffering from a lack of enthusiasm when I sit down at my computer to work on my business. There are a few issues that I have been putting off dealing with but reading an article yesterday highlighted one thing that I hadn't thought off that was draining my energy and killing my enthusiasm for work.

Clutter!

There are many areas of work and life that clutter can affect and I have found since I had a good clear up yesterday, that my energy and enthusiasm has really improved today.

Your Computer

The

first thing I decluttered was my computer. Starting with my desktop - I counted the icons I had on my desktop and there were over 100 of them there! I have gotten into a bad habit of saving things on my desktop so I created folders and moved things into them to drastically reduce clutter on my desktop. I also cleared out the downloads folder on my computer and archived older stuff onto my external hard drive. It's great to have a tidy computer and it even works quicker now too!

Your Workplace

I

am fortunate to have a room at home that I use as an office but it also doubles up as my home gym too! I spent some time tidying the room and putting things away. Next I cleared my desk which had become a bit of a dumping ground for mail, bills, notepads and other junk. I paid the bills, filed statements, made appointments and then shredded anything I didn't need so that my desk was clear again.

Your home

Time

to get rid of anything that causes clutter. Clothes you haven't worn for over a year; widgets hiding in the back of cupboards; junk that accumulates in drawers. Be brutal! All this stuff blocks your energies, so take control again. The year rule is quite a good one - if you haven't used it in the last year then you probably don't need it.

People

Sometimes

the biggest drain on your energy and enthusiasm can be other people. There are some people that just suck the life out of you with their negativity and moaning and some who are continually wanting you to do stuff for them. When you need time for your own priorities then you need to learn to say NO to the demands of others.

It's amazing what a boost to your energy you can get from being a bit more organised and decluttering all areas of your life. Have a go at it this weekend and prepare to start the new week with a tidy work environment and a re-energised enthusiasm!

Cheers

Dave

Hi Dave, this is so true. I have experienced a similar dip over the last month or so and also realised I had to 'de-clutter' (is this even a word lol), before I was able to keep moving forwards in my business.
I hope you feel inspired and have a good energy flow going for moving forwards!

Havd a great week.
Jude

HI Jude.

Yes it's very energising to get everything put away and then work in a more organised environment!

All the best
Dave

At least you have only been suffering from a lack of enthusiasm for about a week. For me, it's been about a month!

Funny that you mention clutter. My wife and I spent a good portion of the day yesterday getting rid of stuff. We are not pack rats by any means, but still, we had a lot of stuff to get rid of.

Hi Steve
It's not much fun to be stuck in a rut but hopefully now that you and your wife have done a bit of decluttering you will find some renewed energy. It's amazing how much "stuff" you accumulate over time

Couldn't agree with you more Dave, in fact, we must have been on the same frequency this weekend as I too tackled the 'desktop' which was laden to the point where I could barely see the wallpaper.
One and a half hours later and there's just the random saved URL's to go. I did the downloads folder a month ago and unzipped a good bunch of freebie plugins that I seem to have accumulated.
It is certainly conducive to a better working environment, that's for sure.

Hi Twack
Yes I think I need to go a bit further with my desktop as it still seems to have too many icons on it. Individual files need to be put into a better system and maybe move more to the external drive to just keep what I need right now.
It feels like progress has been made though!

Cheers

I know what you mean, I am struggling to decide where to keep things, it doesn't help having all the previous (four) hard drives connected up either.
I am trying to add 'sorting' to my daily routine.

Excellent post Dave,

The best way to have a clear mind is to get the environment clear (meaning clean and organized). I read long ago in an article that most successful people tends to be organized and neat in their environments, and made that as a virtue along with perseverance. So we do have something to think about it and a lot to put in actions what we just learn.

Thank you for sharing and have a great day.

Felix.

Hi Felix
That sounds like very good advice to me!
I certainly feel more productive at my tidy desk and decluttered computer

Thanks
Dave

Good one Dave,

I know exactly how you feel after the clutter has been removed.
One of my problems is when I am away from WA for a few days, I have so many posts to check out. I can't reply to them all but read most of them & keep some for reference later.

I also cleared out my computer, & removed a lot of desktop images & other items - boy it felt good.

Another one for me, was to de clutter my brain & endeavor to stay focused. I need more practice on this one - LOL.

Denis

Hi Denis

Yes it can be difficult to stay on top of WA email which is why you might need to be a bit more selective. It can be tough not to read every post from your network but it can be a drain on your energy too.

Cheers
Dave
