There have been a lot of scams in circulation recently and a number of WA members have discussed them elsewhere.

Thankfully this has made people more aware of the possibility of being scammed online and so they are more vigilant and wary of some of the claims being made both in emails and in articles they find online.

For us as marketers this can pose a problem because if you are promoting a product or service and your potential customer doesn't know anything about you then they will be understandably dubious about any claims you make.

One of the best ways to overcome this is to provide social proof.

What's Social Proof?

Social proof is essentially a statement or testimonial that proves a claim to be true or shares a story of a personal experience with a product or service.

This most common form of social proof is a personal testimonial which is where a customer writes to a product or service provider to tell them what they thought of it and what benefits they got.

Here's an example of a testimonial I wrote for another marketer after buying one of his products. He now has it on his site to show new potential customers what "other customers say"

The idea is that if a customer is considering buying something but still undecided, then by reading that others have had a positive experience with the product, they might decide to make a decision to buy.

Whenever I create new products to sell on my sites I always ask customers for feedback and if they write something nice then I ask if I can add it to my site as a testimonial. Having this social proof in place can make a big difference to your sales.

How can you use social proof?

Obviously if you have any testimonials then you should be adding these to your website but a

testimonial is just one way to add social proof.

As affiliate marketers you might argue that you are unlikely to get any testimonials as you are selling products created by others.

Another way to use the power of social proof is to show how others have benefited from a product or quote an authority figure who discusses a product or service.

A good example would be for those of us who promote the Wealthy Affiliate program. If you haven't made any sales yet or maybe just a few then you can't really talk about your own success.

However there are plenty of examples of members who are achieving great success promoting the WA affiliate program.

Here's just one example:

Eddy is a great example of someone who has proved the success of the WA model so if you want social proof for WA then show people what Eddy has achieved.

The same thing applies to any niche.

If you are promoting a weight loss product then show people the great results achieved by people who have used the product.

If you are promoting a gardening product then show people the amazing gardens created by other customers who used the product.

Ask the product owner for examples that you can use in your own marketing.

Social proof is a great way to turn browsers into buyers so be sure to look for ways to add it to your own websites.

Good luck

Dave

Hi Dave,

I absolutely agree with you on your points. Using testimonials can be beneficial for product reviews or marketing your own product.

It’s always nice to read testimonials, and I use them to consider purchasing a product or service. I like reading other people’s thoughts and views. So an excellent point!

Thanks for sharing as always.

Best,

-Eric

Hi Eric

In many cases an undecided potential buyer can use social proof as their final factor in making the decision. Seeing the positive results of others is always reassuring.

Thanks
Dave

Well social proof is also super easy to make up yourself, its not a long job, you certainly cant assume its real. Often you see social proof on new products that have never been in beta Its not possible unless its fabricated

Unusual point Catherine. I'm not condoning telling lies.
Social proof is by definition a confirmation that something is as good as you say it is.
Making stuff up is just fraud and will eventually destroy you as a marketer.

I wasn't in any way suggesting you were telling lies just pointing out that you cant believe it any more than you can believe reviews

Theres no doubt that 'social proof' will help validate a blogs honesty and authenticity. Providing testimonials is an excellent way to allay potential buyers fears. Its just unfortunate that so many websites today even falsify these claims, to the extent that they hire actors from places such as Fiverr to produce false claims in videos.
I believe that honesty is the best medicine. If we stick to only using truthful testimonials then our sites have a far better chance of success.

Hi Jim
I'm certainly not condoning fraudulent behaviour and anyone who uses made up testimonials deserves to be found out.
My points are only referring to genuine social proof which shows the positive results that people have achieved.

Cheers
Dave

Yes, I do understand what you're saying Dave and I do agree totally. Those that remain honest will reap the benefits.

Couldn't have said it better, Dave. Thanks for such an invaluable piece of advice.

Thank you T-R. Glad you found it useful
