How To Avoid Feeling Overwhelmed As A New Marketer

I often see people struggling to get started as a digital marketer particularly when it comes to deciding what niche to enter.

Unless you already have a great deal of experience in a particular field then starting a new website can seem like a daunting task especially when you look at some of the people already creating sites in your niche and the temptation is to think to yourself - I'll never be able to break into that niche. Who would ever be interested in anything I have to say?

The thing to remember is that in every conceivable niche there will be people at every level of experience or expertise within that niche - from those who are absolute beginners all the way up to those who are experts or gurus.

Before we explore this further I just want to share my 3 tips on selecting your niche if you haven't already done so:

How to choose your niche

1: The niche must be something that interests you otherwise you will quickly get bored.
2: The niche must be something you can write regular content about otherwise your site will die out.
3: There must be products you can sell as an affiliate. If you don't have products to sell you don't have a business - you have a hobby.

Expert or Relative Expert

Many people mistakenly believe that they need to be an expert in their niche to be able to create a business in a niche. This is not so!

This is why criterion number 1 above is that your niche must be something that interests you. If you have an interest in something then you will almost certainly have some level of knowledge of the topic. Having this knowledge places you further up the spectrum of expertise than someone who is a total beginner in the niche.

Let me illustrate this with a story. A few years ago my wife and I decided to get a dog. Neither of us had much experience with dogs so we spoke to some of our friends who had dogs to get some tips and advice on how to choose a dog and what equipment we might need. We also got advice on what food to buy and what vets to go to in our town. We also got some advice on training our puppy to pee and poo outside and where to go for walks to keep him safe.

As you can see - he turned out fine 😍

None of our friends are dog experts. None of them are vets or animal behavior gurus. But because they all had dogs already and had some experience with dogs they were Relative Experts in comparison to us.

This is very important to remember when you are starting out. You might think that you don't have much experience or expertise but in comparison to an absolute beginner in your niche you are a relative expert.

Stop looking up at the big guys and the gurus in your niche and comparing your knowledge to them. If you do, you will simply feel overwhelmed and completely out of your depth.

Instead concentrate instead on thinking about how you can help those with less knowledge than you. Remember as you build your business you will be studying your topic regularly and building your expertise. As you build your expertise you will then be able to help more and more people and eventually be considered not just a relative expert but a true expert.

Whatever you are doing this weekend - have a great one!

David

Terrific advice. And you can look up information on your niche and educate yourself along the way. The share what you have learnt.

Great post.

Lily 😊

That’s exactly it Lily. We all learn so much as we build our business and can then help even more people.
Thanks 😀

This! This right here is one of the reasons I will never leave Wealthy Affiliate. The wisdom, knowledge, and general positive attitude sharing is always a welcome sight when I hop on.

I was just recently doing exactly what this post is talking about. I was looking at people like Bill Gates and Donald Trump and thinking to myself how are little people like us ever supposed to accomplish anything relatively close to anything they have built?

In essence, I was looking up at the big guys and not only did it make me feel very overwhelmed but it also brought on quite a bit of depression because it makes me feel so small by comparison.

I'm really glad I stumbled onto this post because I really needed to hear this. Thanks so much for writing it.

Whatever your doing this weekend - I hope your having a blast doing it.

Thanks again man. Really

Hi Joshua.
Thanks very much for your very kind feedback.😀
I’m glad to hear my post was helpful for you. I remember being told this myself by one of my mentors when I was just starting out and it was a real help to me then.
Enjoy your weekend too 👍

Great advice, Dave I totally agree.
Have a great weekend,
Mickey

Thanks Mickey. Hope you have a great weekend too

Thanks for this. Perfectly timed! Christine

Thanks Christine. Glad it was helpful for you 🙂

Agree that all of us are “relative experts” in many things and that helps with identifying niche and having something to write about with confidence.

I think we often underestimate how much we actually know on a subject and how much help we can give others who know less.
Thanks Stanley

Great post - I always say that you must be solving problems - even to the point where you are providing solutions to your readers even if they don't purchase from you.

and of course, patience is key

Paul

Absolutely Paul. The secret to making it in this business is to be constantly offering help and solutions. Not everyone will buy but you set yourself apart from the hordes who are offering nothing but a sales pitch.

Thanks. I totally relate to your post

Thanks Josephine. Glad to hear you found it useful
