Develop The Mind Of A Child - Become A Knowledge Magnet!

Children are amazing! When you think about it, there is no point during our lives when we soak up a wider range of knowledge, than when we are just young children.

For example, as a child you learn an entire new language, you learn how to perform a whole host of fine motor skills (things we take for granted like eating with cutlery, reading and writing, getting dressed, and operating devices such as the TV or toys) and you learn how to interact with other people around you.

How do they learn these skills?

Firstly they follow the example of those who can show them how to do things.

Secondly they are continually asking questions!

I know that some people find it highly annoying when a child is continually asking questions but I think it is a quality to be greatly admired and encouraged. A child that is asking questions is looking for ways to improve their knowledge and solve problems.

When working in my pharmacy I often listen to children asking their parents questions about some of the things they see:

  • Why is that there?
  • How does that work?
  • Where is ...?
  • Who puts those things there?
  • What makes that thing do that?
  • Why is that man listening to our conversation instead of getting my medicine ready? (sorry - kidding!)

By continually asking questions the child is rapidly expanding their understanding of the world around them.

Suppressing our development

For some reason, as adults we have learned to NOT ask too many questions. Maybe we don't want to appear foolish or maybe we think it's just not cool to ask questions.

The problem is, by suppressing our inbuilt curiosity, we also inhibit our creativity as well.

This is a bad thing when you are trying to learn a new skill such as building an online business where many things can appear new and difficult to master.

In the business we have chosen for ourselves, whether that be pure affiliate marketing or a combination of affiliate marketing and product creation, one of the key skills we must learn is - how to make our offering appealing to others.

Here's a few ways you can improve this skill by asking questions in a very non-obtrusive way.

Next time you are browsing in a shop take some time to study what has been done in the shop to make their offering attractive to shoppers (unless it's pile it high - sell it cheap). Why did they do that with their window display? Why are things arranged in that way? What are they trying to achieve with that display stand? Why are their special offers located just there?

Are you getting any ideas yet?

Next, treat yourself to a few newspapers and magazines but instead of looking at the stories, look at the adverts. Again, ask lots of questions. Who is the target audience for this advert? Why did they use that headline? What message does that image give me? How does this advert make me feel? What could I have done to make it work better?

Getting into this habit of continually asking questions is a great boost for your creativity and helps with your problem solving skills when they inevitably present themselves.

You start to see things in a new light and enhance yourself both in terms of your business and your every day life.

Have a great day and be sure to ask lots of questions!

My three year old granddaughter's favorite word is "Why?" I don't get tired of hearing that word unless it's something I should know but have fort\gotten, then I turn to her tickling her stomach saying "Why why why. Is that all you can say?" She usually responds back in giggles "Yes" Sometimes I feel like she is smarter than me, especially when I can't get youtube on my phone and she takes it away from me and pulls it up. This younger generation's computer skills is amazing. I agree, we need to be more observant of things around us more as adults for no other purpose but for our own safety and protection. We live in tough times unfortunatelu.

Have a blessed rest of the week
Charlotte

Hi Charlotte. Yes I think you are right about being more observant. Sadly your safety is one of those reasons but we also seem to develop a mindset of just accepting what we see without question as we get older.

Kids going through their " but why " phase can be both a challenge and so endearing at the same time.

For some reason, we lose that natural curiosity as we grow into the sameness of living to work.

Sound advice Dave, we all need to revisit that time when the world was full of possibilities. For marketers, we need to be continually observing through those rose-tinted marketing glasses.

Jumping over the fence that divides buyers from sellers is like stepping into a whole new world.

Alex

Very true Alex. Developing our marketing strategies and becoming more aware of what works in improving our results will be a key factor in bringing success to our efforts.

Great post, Dave--we should still be like children and not be so inhibited from asking questions even now. We all learn something new every single day, which is as it should be!

Jeff

Cheers Jeff. It's strange how as adults we somehow become less inclined to ask questions when we should always be looking to learn more.

Hey Dave

How does an affiliate with limited technical skills encourage others successfully to promote WA and other affiliate programs?

Maxine

Hi Maxine
You share your experiences and what you have learned along the way. Tell people about the problems you had and how you went about trying to resolve them.

Have a great day!
