Hey I was wondering if anyone can give me advice on where I can learn how to create/develop/build a full-scale, full-on functioning website? I don't want to have a flat kind of sit

Hi there. Take the time and look at all the website themes here at WA. You can find one where you can change anything you want from the header, sidebars, footers. You can go to Fiverr and have some one build a custom header for $5.00 or anything else you would like to do. You are looking for something you already have in your hands

Hey thanks! Carson answered below and told me bout css. Really, the main thing I wanted was to be able to have additional menus and sidebars on specific pages....thanks :)

Those features are easily done in WordPress with minimal coding or can be purchased as features of Premium Themes from respected developers, the majority cost in the region of $50-$100. Rich.

Hey there Taylor.

You can build a full-scale website using WordPress and you'll have a site that is totally functional and one that is easy to manage, setup, and maintain. No one codes from scratch anymore unless you're a tech company (like we are) and have a team of developers. You want to run a business that earns revenue and the last thing you need to worry about is coding. You will benefit from learning a little bit about CSS and HTML, but building a website from scratch and by hand is not something you want to do.

Wealthy Affiliate has cost well over 10 Million dollars (probably more) and 8 years to build. We started out using a platform that was very simple with a forum, and every day 365 days a year since September 2005, we've worked on it. Millions of lines of code, a full team of developers. It's great to want to aim for an ultimate goal of becoming a technology company because it's an exciting business to be in, but I suggest starting with a platform that is easy to use and one that will generate you some seed money.

My question to you would be:

"What are you wanting to achieve with this website of yours?"

Most likely you can do it with WordPress and without touching a single line of code.

Carson

Hey and thanks so much for answering! I definitely wouldn't want to start a website from scratch, I just wanted to know where I would be able to learn how to add or change around things...because I want the basic layout (menu on top and a side bar - something like that), and really the main thing I want is to be able to have additional menus for specific pages cuz that's something I'd really need for what I'm doing.

To modify and change the way things look in WordPress can be done by learning how CSS works (cascading style sheets). CSS is the language that tells a browser how to display things on a website. WordPress can be quickly modified by editing the CSS style sheet for your theme. Tons of training on it out there and here within WA.

Do a search for "wordpress css" or something similar here at WA and you'll find lots of training and discussions on the topic.

Carson

Great! thanks so much..will do!

I've done a fair amount of web coding in my day (several years, in fact). Since you are a newbie to it, understand that there is a bit of a learning curve. And if you are trying to do things that will require PHP and database coding, the learning curve is even steeper. This is going to take you away from building your internet business. My suggestion would be to have a professional coder build your website for you and then you can dissect what they did while learning the technology concepts. This will keep you freed up to do the techniques taught here at WA.

:) Don't have money to hire other people..gotta do this on me own! Thanks!

Hey Taylor, that's why you should build up your business first so that once you are making money then you can take the time to work on your masterpiece at your leisure. But it's up to you. Let us know how the project turns out.

sound good...ok then. back to work!

Hey Taylor,

I'm afraid that I'm with Tommy and Randy on this, too. It's worth bearing in mind that WA wasn't launched looking like this, it started out as a simple forum and has evolved over 8 years and continues to evolve.

If you're determined, then you'll need to start learning to code, in HTML, CSS, PHP, Java, etc. I'd recommend signing up to get Dean's (@Apina) free starter guide on HTML and CSS over at http://www.apinapress.com He wrote it for me originally, after he got sick and tired of my questions about coding here.

Then wander over to Lynda http://www.lynda.com and sign up for their 7 day free trial and see if the level of training they provide on website development will suit you.

Oh, and a great reference source is W3Schools at http://www.w3schools.com :)

Rich. x

Thank you so much for the info!

Follow the bootcamp training to the T and you will learn how to make a great website with content that gets noticed by Google and the other search engines. You can have the most perfect website In the web but if you do not learn how to get traffic to it. It will be a worthless site no matter how much you spend on it. This is a learning process it will take time. Good luck and hang in there

I get that...it's that right now I don't want google or other search engines to notice it...it's more of a project that i'd like to do and create and it won't turn out the way i'd like with just the bootcamp training. Once i create it, i will go back and put in the correct keywords and do all the necessary things to get traffic...but I want to make sure i'm attracting the right kind of traffic and I'd rather work on something for a while, and then when i do go for traffic, a nice percentage will stay and sign up cuz they like my website...rather than go crazy with finding keywords and creating back links, etc. to get traffic when I don't even have a full-fledged website that they'd want to stay on or come back to.
I know it's a learning process...but I want to learn the website development first before I'm trying to get traffic to a site that hardly exists yet.

Hiya Taylor, Tommy's right on it here. Once I got going in the training the only thing that I felt that I needed to do was to switch themes but the going through the training here will get you a fully functioning website WITH traffic and traffic is everything!

Check out my site that is what I learnt by following all of the training courses and I had lots of fun doing it and still having lots of fun

Thanks guys!

Hey I was wondering if there's a way to forward emails from my atmail account to gmail? I've looked but couldn't find a way to do it... Thanks

Hmm. Doesn't work for me. Do not have access to control panel. Why is this?

I followed Welshy's training and it worked perfectly. It's doing it from gmail's end. You can't forward from atmail to gmail but in gmail, you can retrieve from atmail.

Hi Taylor, this is a little old but you should still be able to follow along with the new WA interface etc: https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/how-to-send-receive-domain-email-via-gmail

Thank you so much!!! That worked perfectly!

Hi not sure if I can help but which ISP are you using for email and are you using outlook or web based email?

thanks for replying...I watched Welshy's video on how to do it...and it worked :) so I'm all good.

Hey I just bought a domain from namecheap and changed the dns to wa hosting. I then went on to wa to build my website but when I clicked "build website" this is the message I got:

FYI - I'd check with namecheap, because I wouldn't want to lose anything I started. the h36.com is a domain registered. Can't put the who is link here. Ask Kyle or Carson. Do backups until you know. Am on the side of cautious when things don't seem as they should be. Just saying. ^_~2151/7/6

I found someone else who answered the same question and someone had replied that there was an error because it takes 24-48 hours for the dns change to work..and I had tried to start my wordpress as soon as I had redirected the dns. I tried it again and it worked just fine. Thanks :)

Did you double check you spelled the name right and that you are not doing the siterubix version? It sounds like someone already created that domain maybe. I've never seen this warning before.

I would continue. You haven't built anything yet, so there's really not much to lose. That's just me though. I like to live on the edge :)

Ok then :) thanks!

Hey, I came across a website called foter.com which advertises free stock photos. So far it was the only website I saw which actually had the pictures I needed. Does this make sens

Taylor, this is a plug-in for wordpress, just enter foter in wp-search plugins, you will get 'Free Stock Photos Foter'. They are as Rich says 'Creative Commons' images obtained from many online sources.
I'd go with what has been given in training (as Sherion says) and to avoid being charged with theft, a warning to be not taken lightly, given by The Man - Rich.
Better yet, take your own photos, make your own videos - this will make your site even more unique and power you ahead of others. Great practice for your film-making learned, yes? ^_~2057/7/6

Thanks for the info! Does putting your own photos and videos actually make a difference in ranking and traffic?
And yeah, for my long term project website I will be doing that, but the one i'm looking for photos for is a kind of review site for music videos so I kinda need the actual music videos (link to youtube) and pictures of the actual artists...can't take my own photos for that... :)

Your welcome. For your music yes. YT or hook up to the artist sites too as a fan, ask for pictures or posters and take a picture with a life-sized poster board. Standardize your reviews with ratings by number of comments to the video.
Your own video projects in YT and with your own link to a static, landing or older post page, to G+ and other social sites to link back to your website.
All kinds of ways to optimize your site - see SEO training, lots of information.0056/7/7

I'm planning on doing all of that...but I can only read so fast :) Though I will try to get to everything as soon as I can! Thanks again!

Sorry..my mind just started brainstorming. Love music. Am excited to see your endeavors in your own time. NO rush. Just bookmark and get back to me when you have another question.^_~0115/7/7

Hey Taylor. The problem with any of the services such as foter.com is that they're using Creative Commons which would be fantastic if it hadn't been devalued by services such as Flickr and the actual copyright holder was the person uploading the image and agreeing to its public use, unfortunately this is often not the case. I'd recommend only using images from reliable sources such as http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/images/ (free) or http://www.fotolia.com (paid). If you are going into business, spending hundreds of hours developing a site, then licensing your images legitimately for less than a $1 a time, or often only a few cents via subscription, is the way to go. Rich.

Thanks so much for clearing that up Rich. Really appreciate it!!

You can get in trouble for using some pictures. Here is some training that will help you with some links. https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/where-to-find-images-for-your-website

Thanks so much!

Worry about more important areas on your site than where the photos are coming from :)

:) I know...but pictures give everything a much better polished look. And someone had mentioned to me to be careful about copyright...and I don't want to have problems later on...
And thanks for replying!

Honestly, any photos you use are legal unless it has a certain license. And even then, if you just credit the website you found it, they won't care

Really? Confused...cuz if there really isn't a problem taking any photos than why would people buy??

Sorry, Seth but that's nonsense. You can download the latest Hollywood blockbuster or album from the web but it's still theft and you can be prosecuted in most jurisdictions. I have a portfolio of stock photos with a well known library, and last year I received two payouts of $1,000+ for misuse. I know one Member here who has been billed over $2,000 and another Member told us his partner was billed over $12,000. The record I know of for misuse is $40,000 for a single image. Most of the major stock libraries also now have agreements in place to deindex sites with stolen images by filing DMCAs directly with the search engines. Rich.
