Advance Your Online Business through your Power of Choice

Man is created with an innate ability to make choices: good and sometimes bad. Animals lack that ability of free will. They are governed by their instincts. That’s why a colony of ants will instinctively build up a large reserve of food they will need in winter. Or why a lion will turn on the elderly couple who took care of him when he was a cub and eat them up with little or no remorse. Animals find it difficult to resist the impulse to act when their instinct goads them in one direction. Unlike man, there doesn’t seem to be any moderating influence that puts a wedge between them and their actions. They just go full throttle either for good or bad.

When you wake up in the morning, you are faced with an array of choices throughout the day. You decide what you will wear to work. You may need to decide how you will get to work. Do you want to drive, take the train, or ride with a fellow worker? You can decide to go by Uber. You can even decide not to go to work and work from home instead, especially where such facilities exist. Can you imagine the endless alternatives you have in making just one decision? It’s so unbelievable.

The good choices are the ones that align you to your goals and keep you moving in the direction you have outlined for yourself. Bad choices elbow you away from your goals and set you on a trajectory that is in opposition to them. Sometimes they leave you in a rabbit hole which will take you time and effort to dig yourself out

Why do we find it easier to make bad choices for our businesses instead of good ones?

One of the reasons for it is the dopamine rush we get when we engage in some behaviors. A visit to social media gives you an immediate wave of euphoria that writing a post or working on your website may not necessarily give you. Those likes and comments on your Facebook page give you some immediate gratification that is lacking in most of the tasks you perform on your website just because the rewards are delayed.

I am a news hound with a large appetite for news. I personally find the Google page addictive because of the news it offers its readers. The fact that Google gives breaking news which it updates periodically is a bonus. I find myself straying to the page each time I go to check for the meaning or synonym of a word which is quite often. I catch myself spending a longer period of time than I had bargained for just because I had strayed to the news part of Google instead of staying centered on my search for the meaning or synonym of a word.

The question is: How do we avoid such a powerful distractor?

There are a couple of ways we can do it. In my case, it will be advisable to buy a physical dictionary instead of using Google to find the meaning and synonyms of words. That would stop me from using Google and possibly cure my addiction. That’s easier said than done. Weaning myself from Google will not be easy. Leafing through huge dictionaries and encyclopedias for the meaning of words is the least attractive to me. I have not done it in years and I will need to unlearn the habit of going online to check for meanings and synonyms.

Making bad choices for our business comes to us so easily. It is a spur-of-the-moment decision to jump into social media or start surfing the net. If only we can delay the impulse so we can filter through our goals to see how our choices stack up against them. Ask yourself the question: Is this option in any way or shape in alignment with my goal of gaining financial independence in X years? If it is not, then it is not worth spending your time and effort on.

Some choices that appear difficult and make us feel uncomfortable are the very ones that ultimately are most beneficial. How many of us remember how long it took us to take that final plunge to become members of the WA platform? And how many of us need to remind ourselves daily why we are here to enable us to resist the urge to quit. These are difficult choices for us to make because they are decisions that will make us realize our dreams of business ownership.

There is a problem with the easy choices. They are pleasing in the short term but gradually edge us out of the path of realizing our goals. That’s the problem. So, let me ask you this question: have you been making easy decisions in your business that are pleasing in the short term or difficult, dreary decisions that will bring you to the realization of your goals? If it’s the former, it’s now time for you to step up and exercise your power of choice to benefit your business. If the latter is the case, Kudos and keep staving off bad choices.

There is light at the end of the tunnel if only we stay on long enough and do the hard work.

Dada, we often find distractions difficult to deal with. That is the nature of the best. Building a process can minimize that number; however, there will always be something to keep you on your toes.

    Canty

You are so right, Canty. We need a process to minimize it since it is so difficult to eliminate completely.

Unfortunately distractions are everywhere my friend, but by being focused and committed we can keep the distractions in the back mirror!:-)

I totally agree. A strong commitment and laser focus will keep distractions on the back burner.

    Absolutely my friend!:-)

    Very thought-provoking posts Dada.
I ignore the distractions and keep my blinkers on.
Have a great week my friend :-)

Thanks, Lisa. I can see you have an effective way of dealing with distractions. You just keep the blinkers on!

    Dadaz,
I enjoyed your post and I agree wholeheartedly that distractions are everywhere waiting to divert our attention from the real work. Like many I'm sure, I struggle to keep the focus. This post is a great reminder to prioritize what's important!

I am so glad you enjoyed reading through my post. Prioritizing our business is an effective way of cutting down distractions.
    Thank you.

Very thought-provoking, Dada! I have distractions, but everything in life is not always about work! My endeavors are slowly going the way that I wish them too. I like to stop and "smell the roses" on occasion! All work and no play.......and all that! Life is too short!

    Jeff

I am in complete agreement with you on this. We need to cater to our other interests as well
Thanks Jeff for always stopping by and leaving a comment

    You're very welcome, Dada!

    Enjoy your new week!
