You've got the right stuff… Maybe?

So you want to be an entrepreneur. You want to be self-employed. You want to make lots of money or better yet you've defined your goals and you are going for it. How do you know that YOU have what it takes? I mean, really: how do you know whether or not you have what it takes to win as an entrepreneur or to be self-employed? Perhaps you've done it before. And that's a good point, but any novice investment analyst will tell you that past performance is no guarantee of future success. So maybe you want it badly, maybe you feel it in your bones, maybe you need things to work out well. All those things can help, but they are poor motivators and indicators of future success.

Here's a surefire method to find out. I call it the PURE principle. PURE is an acronym and it means this:

PURE

UNADULTERATED

RELENTLESS

ENTHUSIASM!

Okay, granted, it's a pretty simple principle, but everything doesn't have to be hard does it? Here's how it works and it is very basic. If you can wake up every day and be enthusiastic about where you're going and the path you've chosen to get there, then you've got what it takes. Period.

On the other hand, if you wake up every day and you have to push yourself to get started or you're losing interest or you're dreading the daily task, then you're on the wrong path. It doesn't mean that entrepreneurship or self-employment is not for you, it just means that you are probably on the wrong path to obtain your entrepreneurial or self-employment goals.

So the question remains: is this thing that you're doing right now driving you? Or are you trying to drive it? Are you anxious to get started daily? Are you enthusiastic daily? If not, there's a problem. Adjust. Modify. And sure millions of people wake up every day unenthusiastically going to jobs that they dread. I've been there myself. But at the end of the week or month there's a payoff. There's a paycheck or there's the medical benefits that they've come to rely on.

When you're an entrepreneur or self-employed the payoff is not there at the end of the week or end of the month unless you put it there and you cannot get there without the PURE principle. You can tell yourself anything you want, lie to yourself; go ahead. I'll say it again: You will not get to your goals without the PURE principle.

So what if you're enthusiastic and broke? Good question. You might have to get a miserable JOB and work your PURE magic in the off hours. And can I tell you something else: Money is a POOR motivator for entrepreneurship. I can see the steam rolling off your eyes. Just when you thought I was making sense, I go and say a dumb thing like that.

By definition, entrepreneurship and self-employment are not the same things. Entrepreneurs are generally self-employed. The self-employed are not always entrepreneurs. Does it make a difference? Yes, it can because knowing the difference can drive enthusiasm. Entrepreneurs are driven by a vision that often has little to do with money. They had an idea, a desire, and a passion to bring something into being. The Wright Brothers and the airplane, Ford and the automobile, Bill Gates and software, Zuckerberg and social media, even read about Kyle and Carson of WA, their drive, the motivation was contained in a vision to bring something tangible into existence. The vision is what sustains the enthusiasm.

Perhaps it will take another article to absolutely prove it to you, but I can tell you that entrepreneurship and even self-employment has to do with another principle called self-actualization. In a nutshell it is the desire within us to develop our potential to our higher selves and it encompasses self-esteem and love and belonging. If you're only chasing money, then I caution you to re-examine your goals and to put a vision in place that can sustain your enthusiasm.

I love this explanation and I completely agree! I stick with my niche websites because they are topics I am passionate about, health and nutrition for people and pets. They are not a quick way to make money. I knew I would not make a lot of money quickly and I haven't. That is ok because I am sharing information that is important and learning more about these topics as I go.

I want to learn about this anyway so why not share it with others along the way? That is why I can slog along and keep going. I feel a real sense of accomplishment. I love when people tell me how I answered their questions and they are so glad they ran across my sites.

Hi Jessica, and i agree it's not always about money. Feeling good about what you do and helping others is worth its weight in gold. Continued success to you.
