Ideas For Site Comments

This post started as a reply comment to the following post made by MKearns: https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/mkearns/blog/understanding-c...

I recommend clicking on that link to see some of the ideas outlined by Mike to take into consideration when leaving comments for other's websites.

My response to his post got so long that I had to create my own post!

There has been a LOT of discussion, and confusion, when it comes to Site Comments.

Kyle and Carson have done an excellent job of revamping the Site Comments section, and they have provided the following instruction, which can be found at Site Comments --> Earn Credits --> View More Instructions (this link is right above the button 'Submit my Comment') in Site Comments:

How to Leave Awesome Website Comments!

When offering a comment on a fellow member's website we suggest keeping in mind a few simple things.

Comments that include questions to the author will allow them to reply to you and allow for further engagement on the page. Feel free to ask questions about the content that you feel others reading the content may also ask.

Your comments should be focused on the content and be specific to what the content is about. A comment is your unique opinion on the content and should contain a minimum of 50 words. We check all comments for uniqueness, so please be unique and original. The more thorough you are with your comments, the more thorough others will be with the comments you receive. This is a true pay-it-forward system and you get out of it what you put in.

View the page. In order to submit a quality comment you need to read the content that you are commenting on. Within the area to offer comments you will have a number of ways to open the page to view in a new window. Once you read the content, come back to WA and add your comment within the Site Comments area. You will earn 1 credit for every comment you leave.

Create Unique Comments

The rest of this post is what I almost responded to Mike's (MKearns) comment section (but as you can see, it got too long)...

There are many ways to provide relevant & useful Site Comments.

I'd like to share one thing that caught my attention recently...

Anyone who provides comments has probably noticed at one time or another that when you 'submit' your comment, it is evaluated for originality before it is sent to the website owner for approval.

This is GOOD.

While you want to write something following the 'suggested guidelines' for comments (which are wonderful), you don't want to copy something that's already been stated by another member.

I've found it particularly helpful on one of my own sites when people step outside the box, just a little, to spur additional thought & conversation. Though this takes a bit more effort on the part of the one leaving the comment, I appreciated the variance & have successfully paid that forward a few of times.

The point is...

Comments need to be relevant, but also different! Because your readers are going to BE DIFFERENT!

As the writer...

Come up with something of original value for your fellow member, or touch on something that really drives home a point that the author was trying to convey.

In some cases, it IS beneficial to the author that you 'follow the pack' and reiterate (not copy) what's happening in the comment feed.

In other cases, it's helpful to stray a bit and provoke other trains of thought.

And as the website owner...

Use some abstract thought! Try to figure out where your reader is coming from...because when that article is getting authentic response, you will see comments all over the place! Be prepared for that!

Also...Use the'Edit' button!!!

If there's a word spelled incorrectly, a sentence that doesn't fit, grammar that doesn't make sense (perhaps due to a language barrier), or even something you just don't like! ... EDIT!!!

Edit is a win-win. You get your comment. Your neighbor gets a credit for their own.

Obviously, a comment needs to be relevant and different, I believe that providing comment is all about being helpful in a positive and respectful manner, if you don't understand the topic, because of the language barrier, simply EDIT!
Great post!
