Getting to Grips with the Enigma that is called Google

I recently asked a question about Google algorithms and how we can satisfy our old friend when trying to get ranked.

Yesterday I published a post for a TV box review and I deliberately avoided adding any affiliate links that were not relevant.

I read a bit about this in the algorithm reports about how Google doesn't appreciate phantom affiliate links that are not relevant to the post subject matter.

I have previously added links that were related to VPNs on my TV box reviews and I think this could be harming my SEO.

So, yesterday I didn't add any irrelevant links and....guess what?

My post went straight to page 1. So, in future I will avoid adding any affiliate links that aren't related to the subject matter and instead I will just add internal links to another article on my website.

I hope this will improve my SEO.

So, did you have any affiliate links on that page at all? For each review I do, I put affiliate links to that product at the end, but not to other products. Is that what you mean by unrelated?

Looks like you hit the jackpot! Thanks for this information. It is easy to implement and very effective as your results show.

Hi there
well done and this is an interesting idea
thanks for sharing this knowledge
Cheers PB

Great info thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing this info.

I can't remember being advised to add as much advertising in our posts in Kyle's lessons, Craig. But I do see sites with all sorts of ads in individual posts and pages, which are not relevant. And I think, wow I should do the same.
Good to know now that Mr Google doesn't like them!

Giulia

Hi Giulia, thanks for taking time to leave a comment. I remember Kyle adding as much as 5 or 6 affiliate links but these were "relevant" to the subject matter. I think when we add bait and switch links which are "not relevant" to the subject matter, we may be getting penalized.

Anyway, I have just modified another post and re-fetched as google so will check back in a week or so to see if the rankings improve.

Congratulations, and thanks for sharing the info

Thanks

Thanks for letting us all learn through your experience.

You are welcome

Grandpa Google always keeps us on our toes!

Yup, he's very needy :)

Just when we think we have it all figured out, right? Thanks for sharing.

You're welcome
