Uncle Sam
For more than 200 years, "Uncle Sam" has represented America.
In 1917, J.M. Flagg made a poster, based on a British Lord Kitchener poster from 1914. The poster was used for recruiting soldiers for WWI and WWII.
Flagg supposedly modified his own likeness in order to create the face of Uncle Sam.
But the face has also been said to be similar to Sam Wilson, a New York meat packer, who supplied beef to the United States Army during the War of 1812.
It seems the barrels of meat were stamped with "U.S."
The soldiers began to describe the food as "Uncle Sam's" food.
A local newspaper got ahold of the story, and "Uncle Sam" soon became a widespread name for the United States government, especially in times of war.
Do you have the ability to draw, or could you hire someone who does?
How about creating a memorable character for your website?
It's something which can make your brand more recognizable.
