The Sue At School

Yesterday was a teacher planning day, and I took the opportunity to do something I've been promising to do for a long time...

I took my granddaughter, "The Sue," to school with me.

She does her learning in a little one-room school in a business plaza, so she was always excited to hear about PeePaw's big elementary school.

She's 4-years-old.

Her Mom dropped her off at my house early in the morning, still in her pajamas. I helped her pick out an outfit to wear for her big day.

She looked very cute in a white dress and a blue-striped top. Sneakers with little gemstones.

I parked in my regular spot in the side parking lot, and I could tell she was impressed with the size of the school.

The first thing she said was "Look, PeePaw...a big park!"

I explained that she was looking at two of three playgrounds and the recess fields behind the school, an area which is probably larger than a lot of parks. I promised her we'd go out there later, and let her try out the equipment.

The first stop was the special needs building, where Mr. Michael allowed her to play with his big box of plastic foods. We spent several minutes being served delicious meals by "Sue, the waitress," who earned a big tip for her wonderful attention to detail.

Next, she spent some time in Mr. Todd's ball pit next door. She even kept all the balls inside the pit! (Mr. Todd is also the talented bass player in my band, and my friend.)

We wound our way through the 2nd Grade pod, saying hello to many school friends as we encountered them. I discovered that The Sue, who is very outgoing with one or two people (even strangers!), gets a little shy when faced with a group of 6-8 adults.

To almost everyone she met, The Sue said, "This is my PeePaw and my teacher." She was obviously enjoying herself.

Next stop: the office.

The Sue was most looking forward to meeting Assistant Principal, Mr. Wolf, and when she saw him, she ran up and gave him a big hug, telling him, "I saw you when I was a baby!" (She loves animals, and I think the name had something to do with her excitement.)

He cordially said he remembered that time, even though the two had never laid eyes upon each other.

Meanwhile, Ms. Slusser, the Principal, smiled and gave us one of those "What am I, chopped liver?" looks.

I explained that The Sue was probably fantasizing about Mr. Wolf being a real (albeit friendly) wolf, as one of her favorite games with Peepaw is Circus Sideshow, in which we take turns being either the Sideshow barker or the "half-human, half-gorilla, discovered deep in the jungles of the Amazon."

She even has the spiel down pretty well..."Ladies and gentlemen...you won't believe your eyes...it's here...it's alive!"

When I introduce her, The Sue growls and leaps on me!

After meeting all the office staff, we made our way through the 1st Grade and Kindergarten pods, meeting people as we went. Everybody was happy to finally meet The Sue in person.

Next, I showed her the large cafeteria, and this was a place which really impressed her. Kids were there for the Place Program (before and after school care), and The Sue settled right in with some of the kids playing with building blocks.

The back side of the school was next, and we went through the 4th and 5th Grade rooms, before heading out to the playground.

I discovered that The Sue not only likes pretending to be half-girl and half-gorilla, but that she can climb like a monkey! Unfortunately, there was still some dew on the swings and slides, so we had to bypass those attractions, as she was in a white dress, and I didn't want to get in trouble with "Mom."

Later, while waiting for Mom to get done at the gym, we played the retro video game, "Zelda, A Link To The Past," on my laptop. The Sue was able to learn all the control keys fairly quickly, although she needed PeePaw's assistance to fight off some of the more aggressive attackers in Hyrule Castle.

Mom showed up in a little while, and I gave them both a hug and a kiss. After finishing my day of work, and the two of them going off to the beach, we went to a Fresh Market restaurant for dinner.

The place cooked me a nice mix of brown rice, grilled chicken, black beans, and fresh zucchini. It was delicious!

We went back to my house and played a little more Zelda, finally rescuing the princess from the castle, before saying our goodbyes.

It was a memorable day!

Good afternoon Rick,

That was a lovely story with a lovely little lady as the protagonist.
When I read a story like that I am a tic sad I do not have children but my furry friends do nearly fill that gap. Will you have a look at my new post? Gracias.

Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

Hi Taetske, and thank you. I'll check out your post. :)

This has made my day! I love to hear about The Sue, she is an adorable 'little lady' and sounds like she can manage school with aplomb! Thanks Rick :)

Thanks, Sue. Though she is only 4, she's really smart, and could probably manage in 1st grade. :)

What a wonderful story Rick!!

It sounds like you had a beautiful day with "The Sue". And she is a beautiful "SUE".

I think that I almost love being a grandparent as much as I did a parent. I love spending time with my granddaughter!!

I will wait to hear more. I enjoyed this story soooo much!!

Dinner sounded really scrumptious too.

T

Thank you, Tammi. We had a great time, and she had been wanting to go to school with PeePaw for a couple of years. Dinner was great, too! :)

I love "the sue" Rick when you post about her it's a real treat. One of my grand daughters Emma is much the same way at 5. At m physical therapy a lady comes in with her cute 4 year old grand daughter Lili "Lills" She is an instant hit. They all seem to share some heavenly angelic ether and know when you love them immediately. Love to show you what they are coloring!

Thanks, Mike. Vera had the idea to do the post about her. :)

I can see her with Vera. Bridesmaids with flowers at different ages! :)

A beautiful story about a gorgeous Princess, you are blessed to have her, Rick. The pleasures of grandparenting!
Carol

You're absolutely right, Carol. Thanks so much. :)

That is so very cute. I can relate very much, as my own "baby" just turned 6 a very sweet little girl too. Glad you got to have such a great day with her.

Thank you, Lesa. :)

Great story that will immortalize her at 4. Still waiting for the grandkids but have 2 grandkittens. Jay

Grandkittens are cute, too, Jay!

I've missed hearing about The Sue. She's adorable! I've missed reading more from your corner of the world too. :)

Thanks, Sue. We had a good day! :)

A special day for you both. She is sure to remember it.What a cute girl! Very polite and outgoing. What is she taught at her school?:))

She's in a kindergarten class, and doing well with letter sounds, counting, and the like. Thanks for suggesting the blog, Vera! :))

My pleasure. I enjoyed it. And the Sue is quite worth it.
There was the question- why the Sue?
I guess that's the function of the definite article, showing the uniqueness, right? Or was there another story behind it?:)

It's just simply something I started using for her-don't know why-and I have continued to use it. Like I called one of my daughters Pete Hawdoo. :))

I am lucky that you don't call me Vanya Anyhoo, or something....hahaha...:))

You do have your nicknames, though, Vera. :)

Oh , yeah...:)))

:)))

You should have been awarded, BTW. I only later thought about it. To have kept half- girl half- gorilla clean and neat in a white dress was a heroic act on your part!:))

Thank you! "She's here...she's alive...you will not believe your eyes..." :))

Hahaha...:)))

Very touching story. I never married so don't have any kids or grandkids. I do have nieces and nephews but they're all grown up and on their own. The youngest of all of them just went off to college in August. She seems to like it. Let me ask you one quick question and the answer may be in one of your posts but this is the first one I've ever read. Why do you call her "The Sue?"

Thanks, Shelley. I'm just a nickname kinda guy. Her real name is Lilli, but I usually call her "The Sue," and I don't really know why. Sometimes, I call her Little Eddie. (I'm Big Eddie) :)

Good enough for me!!!

:))
