The Prodigal Dog

I was talking to Vera recently, and she said something about seeing a Prodigal Dog. Unfamiliar with the term, at least as applied to an animal, I asked her what it was.

"It's a dog that lives on the streets," she said.

"Oh," I said, "We call that a stray or a mutt."

I told her I did like the name, "Prodigal Dog." (and you know what that means...)

THE PRODIGAL DOG

A man had two dogs.

The youngest dog asked for bone after bone from his master, and when he had accumulated enough bones, he ran away from home, to make his way in the world.

But, he much too quickly chewed through all his bones, and was forced to return home, with his tail tucked between his legs.

Knowing that things would never be the same between the man and himself, he intended to beg his master to allow him to be a simple watchdog, chained to a stake in the yard.

The young dog was very surprised when the man heartily welcomed him back into his home, scratching him behind his ears, and even giving him a bowl of meat and some more bones to chew.

The older dog would have none of it, but his master reminded the older dog that one day, the house would belong to him, and that they should rejoice in the return of the younger dog, because he had been lost, and was now found.

Have you ever been lost?

Are there times when you feel lost here?

There are people here who have been down the path you are on; people who will take you in, and welcome you home.

They, too, were once lost, but found their way, and they probably had someone to lend them a hand on their journey.

Prodigal sons and daughters, like prodigal dogs (or cats), are always welcome back home!
