The Greatest Irony Of All!

Former University of Florida football player, Aaron Hernandez, signed a National Football League contract with the New England Patriots in 2012, at age 22, for a record 40 million dollars!

He had been a standout player in high school, a highly touted college recruit, and an All-American with the Florida Gators.

Astonishingly, less than a year after signing his contract, becoming the youngest player in the NFL, and joining the most successful football franchise of this century, Hernandez was convicted of murdering Odin Lloyd, who had been dating his fiancee's sister.

He was sentenced to life in prison, without the possibility of parole.

Recently acquitted of another double-murder, Hernandez stunned friends and family by hanging himself in his cell, using a bed sheet tied to a window.

Perhaps the greatest irony of all is that, because Hernandez had not exhausted all his appeals, his murder conviction will be overturned by a Massachusetts legal principle dating back to pre-Revolutionary War times.

His suicide, in the eyes of the state, made him an innocent man.

Wow, I didn't know that. Thanks for enlightening me....again, Rick!

Wayne

A weird quirk in the law, Wayne.

It is a sad story of a lost young man with tons of talent but a lack of common sense...

You're right, Keith.

Sad story. And strange laws.

Odd, old laws, still on the books, Eric.

I know a lot of you are thinking about Hernandez' daughter and will she be taken care of in the future---I don't mean to sound crass but it's not the responsibility of the Patriots to take care of her---it was AAron's duty---he signed a 40 million $$$ contract which was only worth 35 million now which means he was already paid 5 million $$$--unless he went through all that money living high there's money to take care of her---most football players have financial advisors available to them to help them invest their money so when their playing days are over they're left financially secure---that's the money that's taking care of his daughter

Once he was convicted of the first murder his playing days in the NFL were over and whatever balance was left on his contract was null and void---it was up to him to take out an insurance policy to take care of his family. I'm sure the Patriot's lawyers knowing his violent behavior patterns since they were well documented while he was in college took that into account when drawing up his contract

My father was a lawyer and passed away when I was 18. He's been gone nearly 47 years---he passed away in 1970 before the laws changed governing the right to an education or employment for people with disabilities. He knew he had 2 children that had disabilities and would need to be taken care of financially, and with the help of a broker he made investments in stocks like coke where the stock has split and showed my mother what investments to make that would bring her in monthly dividends. We are financially secure because he knew what to do.

Basically what I'm saying is most pro teams because they draft young players with big salaries and probably also don't know how to manage money, because they've never had it; they make financial advisors available to them to help them with investments for financial security of their families.

Thank you for your insight, Davida! :)

Such a wasted life. Thanks for the interesting post, Rick.

You're welcome, Mike! :)

What a very sad story...

Yes, it is, Vera.

:(

I think Aaron Hernandez is one of the most talented TE in the NFL. He has the speed of a WR. I wish he never got mixed up with that type of crowd. He probably come down to one of the best TEs that ever played in the league if he finished his career like that TE from the Falcons.

He was very talented, Rog.

This was a troubled player from long before his college days. Read that he was on the same team at the same time as Tim Tebow and got into an altercation at a bar and grill by punching out a bouncer and Tim Tebow stepped in to break it up and that he was charged by the police and the head coach at the time intervened to say they would handle the problem internally. He was violent and had problems from childhood---instead of disciplining him and dealing with his problem---it was swept under the rug because he was so talented---his violent behavior finally caught up to him to the point that he took his own life

You're right there, Davida. He had a troubled past that was overlooked because he was very talented. :)

So will this make his contract good again retroactive and go to his famiy?

I hope something will go to his family, Geoff, because he has a young daughter.

the contract was for playing not for sitting in jail and once he was convicted of murder his contract was null and void--so there's no money going to anyone

Not sure, Davida-It depends upon the terms of the contract. Some of those agent and high profile sports lawyers are pretty sharp! :)

I'm sure they knew of his troubled past when he signed with the New England Patriots and possibly an insurance policy was taken out on him, which may be the only way his daughter and girlfriend would be protected; but the New England Patriots are not obligated to pay his family.

No matter how good the agent is when he represents a player with a troubled past, more likely means he doesn't have a lot of wiggle room when negotiating---I'm sure the lawyers for the Patriots had a clause in his contract covering his violent behavioral tendencies.

I had read that. His innocence may bring up some unprecedented legal questions.

he was found guilty of the murder of his friend and found not guilty on the double homicide charge so he wasn't totally off the hook to say

You might be right, Davida. :)

It's interesting to think about, Geoff.

Posthumous absolution. Most interesting Rick!

Thanks, Mike!
