Gateway To What?

Every so often, my computer just refuses to do anything at all!

I try various ways to rouse it from its stupor and get it working...

...Closing all the tabs...

...Going in through "History"...

...Closing the program and going back in again...

...Restarting the computer...

...Praying to the computer Gods...

Nada...Zero...Zip...Zilch...Drawing a blank...Diddly squat...For naught...Epis...Nothing...

You get the picture.

I'm getting nowhere.

Then, all of a sudden, like a bolt out of the blue, I get this message:

You ever get this message?

Wikipedia describes it thusly: "The server was acting as a gateway or proxy and received an invalid response from the upstream server... There are many other 5xx server error messages, all of which boil down to: The server failed to fulfill an apparently valid request."

What?

I know about salmon swimming upstream, in order to mate and then die...

That's when the Grizzlies catch tons of them!

But, an upstream server?

It seems to mean that one server or the other just ain't doin' what it's supposed to be doin'.

At any rate, it always throws a wrench into the works, and nothing happens for a while.

I usually end up playing Forge Of Empires for a few minutes, then going back to whatever it was I was trying to do before, and by then the "Upstream Server" has decided to have mercy on me, and allow me to resume my work.

Lifewire suggests the following ways to deal with this issue, which is probably NOT with your computer:

1. Try loading the URL again-Press F5, or click refresh/reload.

2. Close all browser windows, and open a new one. Try the webpage again.

3. Restart the browser program.

4. Clear your browser's cache. Try the page again.

5. Delete your browser's cookies.

6. Start your browser in safe mode.

7. Try another browser.

8. Reinstall your browser.

9. Restart your computer.

10.Restart modem, router, switches, or other devices.

11.Change your DNS server.

12.Contact the website, and let them know about the problem.

13.If it's a popular website, check it out on Twitter.

14.Contact your Internet Service Provider.

15.Come back later. (Works for me!)

Problems come and problems go,

Hope this helps, no quid pro quo.

sounds like your portal to another galaxy or dimension was interrupted. Had it happen many times :-)

Guess it's not too unusual, Wayne.

no, not really, Rick.

If many of us experiences this meaning it does not come from us or from our computers it's in the Web Host or somewhere else. So it is good for all of us to register if we encounter the same so the management may know it.

Agreed, Jimmy.

Thank you for great tips to solve the problem.

You're welcome, Nattawut.

My guess is that every one of us experiences this at one time or another. Tgar reminds me, there is a new anthology show on Hulu si milar to Twilight Zone called

"Dimension 404"

The title is based on the Error 404 message you get when you enter a bad URL.

Interesting, Hal. I don't get Hulu, though. I'll tell my bass guy about it-He has Hulu.

This is the very reason, I've invested in an iPad Pro. No scan disc, no defrage, few if any browser issues. And you can be on it for hours, and it just keeps on going, at lightning speed if you have a good internet connection. I do have a computer, but use it for mainly, data transfer.

Sounds pretty good, Thomas.

Sorry to be laughing but I understand the frustrations!! :))

Me, too, Carol. :)

I think we have all been having this problem. Carson stated that it was on WAs end.

According to what I read, it's a problem of the service provider. :)

Hi Rick ... Your post badly influenced my computer....lol It for the first time has thrown "02 Bad Gateway", started feezing, then flickering, then something else...
Some unwanted synchronicity... :)))

Sorry if I was contagious, Vera. :)))

Not you, your computer, Rick. They sometimes have life of their own...lol:))

Welcome to "The Cyber Zone". I'll bet you could write great songs about that one, and name the album "502 Bad Gateway". I get those errors too, now back to work if the cyber chick will let me pass through now.

It sounds like some kind of sci-fi thing, Deb. :)

Every time I go on my computer it is like a sci-fi thing. Maybe it's just me.

I get a lot of 504's and others Rick. There was one blogged about today. Usually contact site support!

Seems to disappear, given a little time, Mike.
