When is Something Considered Vintage?

I was a little tickled a few minutes ago speaking on the phone, to a charming gentleman at an apple store in the USA.

Now the deed is already done; I have bought a new computer; but the 2012 computer still works, There is a WIFI issue that I have learn how to manage, but 3 different technicians could not manage to log in to the computer. I did it for them.

The apple store tops the bill; He charming gentleman claims they are not allowed to touch vintage computers, he will have to send it to a special repair shop.

When is an item referred to as vintage? I thought it was 20 years, let's reduce it to 15 for a computer, my computer is not yet 7 years old. It still works, but needs servicing.

I have 3 bandsaws 100+, 30 and 25 years old; 2 ceramic electric wheels over 20 years old; That was when there was consideration for the sonsumer; but not today; the rules have changed.

A certified apple repair shop in my area wanted $775.00 to service the computer, forcing me to purchase a new one for $995.00.

Is it possible to share the wealth a tiny little, do you really need a trillion or billions of dollars?

Pass a little on the consumer; let's consider vintage 15 years at least.

share your thoughts.

Oh my... very crooky indeed!

I have an 07 mac book laptop that I still use from time to time. I, of course, do not go online with her much but she still has good uses to her. However, I have moved away from mac with no regrets.

My 05 Nissin Titan many laugh at now, however she is paid off, does exactly what she was made to do and serves me well. I do not consider her Vintage, however, my 1973 Suburban 4x4 is very much Vintage. And she does exactly what is asked of her also year after year.

Good evening Cali,

My car is not that old. It is a small 206 Peugeot Cabrio from 2000.
I love to drive it open winter and summer. It is doing a great job and has nearly 150.km.

Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

I have found that Peugeot is a very well built vehicle. I worked on a few back in the day and had to unlearn how American cars are put together for Peugeot did not build their cars the same. To remove the engine from the car, one has to start at the rear of the car and remove all the parts from the driveline up to the back of the engine before I could remove the engine to rebuild it.

I had to learn some of the same lessons working on the VW beetle, but what a fun car that was.

Your Peugeot is barely broke in as we consider such here in America. Mine has 160 k on her and she runs perfectly.

I also have a 2000 Bombardier Can-Am Quad, engine built in Austria and she has more power than most over Quads I have ridden and she still performs time after time.

Good Morning from California

Thank you for the cool photos. I do not have car photos but have a look at my last WA post, there are some pretty flowers

sweet, I take photo's of every event I work, I love to see things from other parts of the world. Thanks for sharing. Glad you enjoyed my photo's

I love it , will we ever get back to quality first and repeat business second. I still use a 100+ year old blower to keep the dust away and on to the open lot.

As the measuring mark for something vintage is a moving subject, I have found that the younger the measurer is, the lower the number to be assigned this classification!

Technology worships youth!
I share your pain!

Well said, I hope they can continue to afford the cost.

Good evening Courtney,

This post made me smile as I am living surrounded by old and antique things. They belonged to my Mother and grandmother. Each item has a story attached.

What is less nice is that nowadays things are not made to last.
I belong to those type of people that as long as something functions I will not buy a new one.

I share your sentiments; I even keep broken tools for parts replacements.

Lol. Thanks for this. I just joined a Penn Vintage Fishing Reel group on Facebook and have no idea what to post. This helps. 👍

I considered anything I had when I was a Youngster to be vintage - LOL ... (but I am OLD)

In computer world things change seemingly every year, so a 7 year old computer might very well be considered vintage to the techie Geeks at a company shop - but I can guarantee you there are plenty of people and Small repair shops that could fix your issue for you, and would be glad to do it for a heck of a lot less than $700

I recently had a conversation wit the owner of a small electronic shop, and he was applauding the opportunities for young people to get into the repair business, because as he puts it, - "There is a lot of money to be made" the young people might think differently.

Thanks for sharing, Courtney.
