We Cannot Take Water For Granted Anymore

As a kid growing up in Barbados, we were told that Barbados had some of the best drinking water in the Caribbean.

We did not have running water at the time but there were public standpipes in every community; and water was never a problem; the cost was hidden in the tax bills.

Today most of the standpipes are gone and there are periodic warnings about water shortages; A few months ago there was a barge taking water from Guyana to Barbados.

Apparently there was an issue and I was told the barge never arrived.

The Caribbean has been experiencing periods of drought and some time ago there were reports of two islands rationing water.

Many countries are installing desalination plants; some plants are along the coastlines; which can present problems of pollution and harvesting of fish.

Climate change, drought, contamination of the water tables and other environmental factors are raising international concerns about the availability of fresh drinking water for the Global population.

Recently we heard the news that Cape town was rationing water and is about to run out of water; I hope the recent rains has abated the situation.

Have you checked your water bill lately?

Can you believe it? My last case of drinking water came from Niagara, Ontario Canada.

Every time I visit the supermarket, I am seeing a different brand of drinking water.

Do you know the source of your water? Remember Flint.

In the last 3 months my purchases of desalination water for the cistern was $9OO.00; and drinking water is an average of $120.00 per month.

Is water a concern in your neck of the woods?

We've been very fortunate here in the southeastern U.S. We haven't experienced any problems yet. We're keeping you in our prayers.

I like your heading Coutney "We can't take water for granted"! Our source of water comes from winter run off's into three lakes.

Last winter there was snow falls that I can only remember when I was a kid, and there has been a lot of flooding in the surrounding areas.

But our lakes are polluted because the of sewerage doped into the lakes. We are fast becoming a very populated area because there is a lot of immigration coming into BC Canada and the residence of Vancouver are selling there property’s for very high prices and moving to the interior of BC.

Housing has sky rocketed in just these last three years. Although we still have very good sources of water. With water purification plants that are fast become needed.

The city has taken steps for a better sewage plants, but I think that it a bit late in the game they will never recuperate our lakes. And water will become the most sought after liquid. I cannot even begin to imagine the queous that will take place.

As for me and my house I filter all our drinking water and I also have water storage. The filter I use has the capacity to filler up to 5000 gallons of per filter. removing 99.99% contamination from our water. I have on hand 24 gallons of drinking water at all times for three family members. I have it on a rotating method. I now that when the time come this will not be enough. I hope to have in place enough filters to help out family and friends.

I can go on and on about water but it is enough that I have set in place to take care of my family for a time.

always a better way
Linda

Thank you for sharing; pollution is becoming a major problem in the supply of clean drinking water. Management of our natural resources is major. I just watched a video on the pollution caused by Diamond mines and the availability of water for mining purposes at the same time the poor workers are hurting for clean water. Oh for a better world. What has happened to our hearts and humanity?

Hi Courtney

Yes, rain has brought some relief to Cape Town. But the City is not out of the woods yet. Desalination has been talked about down there too. But who will do the project has stopped it in its tracks.

South Africa is water scarce country, so there is a lot of care how we use it and it does cost a pretty penny.

Thanks for sharing.
Mojalefa.

Thank you for the news; How does your cost compare with the cost I shared/?

Here we pay for electricity, water and services. The geyser (cistern) is what usually shoots up the electricity bill to an easy $700/month. We have opted for pre-paid electricity to control it better and have been turning off the cistern during the day and at night. There are timers to control that. We often churn out another $300 or so for water and services (garbage collection, etc.)

Similar to our situation.it's not easy when there is no rain I have never turned off the cistern. The pumping of water is expensive as our electricity rates are very high.

It is very ironic since we have a knowledge centre for kids in my area and they display water bottles and label how far they have traveled in order to get to our place. Norway still have one of the cleanest drinking water in the world and even so we import from far away. Most likely there are companies in the country that struggles that still export their own drinking water.
Sometimes it makes me wonder what our (the worlds) educational system really is worth.....

I am surprised to hear you comments coming from a country that also has one of the best education systems in the world. Is the importation of drinking water really necessary in your Country?

We have more than enough water to go around for everyone and more producers of bottle water than needed. I think it may be the downside of branding since people in Norway wants Evian or another specific brand then it travels hundreds of miles north instead of taking the trip south where there is a lack of water. Happens all over the globe so Norway is not to blame since it is based on business and not natural demands, survival or human ethics.

Minerals change. need doesn't 1900's=diamonds, 2000's=water.
Plenty of rain in the eastern US. Water tables disturbed by fracking though!

The mining of diamonds is a huge problem in Africa; I did not know that fracking also poses a water problem. The love of, and greed for money is destroying our ability to enjoy the spending of money for vast numbers of the Global population.

Fortunately here in NE- India, access to pure drinking water hasn't been a problem yet.
This can caution many of us getting prepared.

Thanks for sharing

What is the source of your drinking water? Lucky you.

I'm sure you get it from pure Himalayan streams Phak and not the Ganges sewer!

I am using a tube well freshy and lesser pollutions.
Hope the thing continues.
Cheers!

It is very much the far flung Himalayan edgy source.
Cheers!

I live in the USA in the state of Texas and some years ago we had a drought. But not its the opposite by getting more rain then we need , so we had some flooding. So we have plenty of water for now. But i still remember when are lake out side of town where we get are water supply was all most empty.

The water table in some cities are getting dangerously low. Please send us some rain;it's becoming like gold here.I saw my neighbour filling his cistern yesterday for the second time in less than a month. That is $600.00

I will pray for it.

That is a worrying situation Courtney-in the UK we have a good water supply although they do add chlorine and fluoride to it which is a contentious issue here. However we should be grateful that our water is so plentiful.

Best Wishes

Hazel

Not everywhere in the UK. The growing population in London has been causing some concern
That was surprising to me because of the available sources of water.

The Netherlands does not have a shortage yet, I pay around the $16 a month and our water supply is trustful

$16.a month? Think of the money I can Save.I guess you can't have everything;no wonder you are famous for your flowers.I have cut back on kitchen gardening because of water
I have to use grey water for what little I have.

I feel ashamed, here in the Netherlands, we do everything with drinking water, washing clothes, cars, and the garden flowers.

We are having a bit of a drought in Taiwan, though usually, we have plenty of water. As part of my site on Urban Survival, I recommend getting a Big Berkey Water filter. It can't take out salt, but it can take out almost everything else. Assuming you have some water in the first place to be filtered.

Every house in Anguilla is built with a cistern underground for collecting rain water from the roof:which adds substantially to the cost of building as we live mainly on a rock You must use heavy duty equipment to dig the cistern. Our cistern holds 33.000 gallons, you can imagine the amount of rock breaking. The rock was so hard th st 2 drills bent from the heat.
