The Day 40 Foot Containers Flew Like Kites

September 6 is a day when anyone who experienced Hurricane Irma will never forget. It was a day when containers flew like kites and zinc ripped in pieces like it was paper

There are some who believed the winds reached close to 300 miles per hour, certainly Juliana Airport reported 225 per hour winds before it suffered millions of dollars in damage.

People are still traumatized, especially those who lost everything; entire homes and contents; one relief worker told a story of an elderly gentleman being afraid to open his door to receive some water and canned goods.

I saw concrete homes completely flattened as if a bulldozer had pushed it down, I saw metal from a steel building 5 miles away on a undeveloped lot.

I saw containers as far as two miles away from their original position.

My next-door neighbor had all but two of his solid wooden windows and doors blown off from his four year old vacation home and the contents of the house scattered over three acres of bush land.

What Impact will Irma have on Insurance Companies, premiums and building codes; after hurricane Lewis in 1995 several insurance companies disappeared.

A couple large tourists developments took the insurance money and vanished in thin air; leaving the properties as eye sores on the landscape.

Sad for those who lost so much and for those who lost family.

Went through a typhoon in 1968. Winds were only 90mph. Still caused a lot of damage, especially to trees.

We have our challenges in Anguilla but our twin sister Islands are hurting badly about 1000 people are homeless and about 100 are still in shelters. Many of the homes are uninsured.

So sad to hear and I pray for all the people who are affected.
My Dad always used to say to me, Nature is the greatest force in our life where we are helpless against it.

I am really shocked at some of the damage I see. A friend lost 40 feet of beachfront land outside of his restaurant,.the damage from the sea was really bad.

This is heartbreaking to hear, Courtney. i pray for relief for you all :)

we are getting 50 linesmen from Canada to help in the restoration of electricity, The Dutch St.Maarten government just collapsed over the recovery issue, they are trying to avoid aa announced new election in December, an election they can't afford.

The power of those winds cannot be begun to be understood Courtney!

This looks like the beginning of things to come; the Prime Minister of Dutch St.Maarten described Irma as a category 7 which is a first.

I hope everything is alright, Courtney.

We are trying, but it is a rough experience.

Wow, that is serious devastation. Surprised there wasn't more loss of life, and injuries. My heart goes out to all those affected.

Yes I am too when I look at some of the damaged houses, we only had 1 fatality, I don't think the number is known in St Maarten/ St. Martin or Dominica, but they both exceed 25.

know that experience the wind was just as bad 4 days later here

Where is here? we had the same.
