So Happy To Be Carving Again

work in progress

It is now 47 years that I gave up a career in teaching to become a fulltime artist, creating things of beauty in both ceramics and wood.

There is no doubt that woodcarving has become my number one passion.

This is the second longest drought in the history of my work, hobby and passion.

In March of 2013 I suffered a mild stroke, and it was five months before I defied doctors orders and began using my wood carving tools again; chisels, chain saws, angle and die grinders, band saws, electric drills and a drill press.

On 5 September we started to await the passing of hurricane Irma which started on the 6th and left our Island without electricity, running water, communications via radio, Television, Mobile devices and Internet. Some of us are still without electricity and normal Internet service.

It is now 47 days after the passing of hurricane Irma and we have just installed a 6500 watts generator and; so I was able to commence carving and potting again.

My work in ceramics was limited to the slab roller, but now I can begin throwing on the wheel, however firing in the electric kiln will have to wait until we regain electricity, which is projected to be December; Thanks to a team of 0ver 40 Canadian linesmen coming to assist in the recovery process.

Making Adjustments

It is now necessary to make an adjustment. Internet access is available 9am to 4pm, I made maximum use of the opportunity; now that the generator is installed; in order to make use of daylight, Internet access will be reduced to four hours per day.

My activities at WA will suffer, but I am trying to make the best of a challenging situation.

Giving Thanks.

As an artist myself, I totally get why you are called back, time and again, to your art form. It never leaves us, does it? Even when our bodies get in our way, or weather gets in our way.... we still are called.

Proud of you. Proud of your works. If you were closer I'd take you to LUNCH!! ;-)

Thanks, what is your medium/? I work in wood and ceramics mainly.

I'm a musician, songwriter and actor. My current website is all about the music side of things. If you'd like to see what I do check out seriousgas.com.

What's your website??

Thanks for keeping us posted. It's important to do what you love so I'm happy to hear you're back to carving. We're each given skills in this life and we must use them right?

You are so right; this morning bright and early I was working on a new sculpture. I tried to throw on the potter's wheel but the power was not strong enough to operate the wheels, must speak to an electrician.

You're an inspiration to many who currently HAVE all the resources and still not doing as much as you. You're in our thoughts and prayers.

These are beautiful carvings!
So good you are back on carving.
Wishing you all the best!

So great to see you working back on your carving, Courtney.

Thanks, it feels great.Wifey is away for 2 weeks, she really needs the break, my work is my break. For an American she really handled the situation really well; but I am missing her already.

I am sure you are! Stay strong and focused, Courtney. Best wishes as always :)

you are so talented. Thanks for the pictures.

I feel like I have short-changed my Teacher Training; but I am doing what I love best.Thanks.

That's always a good thing.

Beautiful to see your work my friend and thank you for sharing

Paul

Nice to hear from you.Thanks.

I feel so happy for you, Courtney ツ

Thanks Loes; I see St. Maarten has finally agreed to the conditions for the Dutch recovery aid; What are the sentiments of the Dutch citizens in Holland?

Most have a warm heart for St. Maarten and the other Islands. But we also know about the corruption there, so they had to agree to our rules for getting any money. Otherwise, there will be quite some money going into the corrupted pockets. My son in law is from origin Antillian, so my grandson is half Antillian ;)

Fabulous, glad you are back creating Courtney!

Thank You, last sunday I was walking on the beach and Bankie Banx, our top musician was on the balcony of his roofless beach house performing for a few friends.

That's great! How is Shoal Bay?
Are those small restaurants back and up and running by the beach or are they all gone?
