Long Dark Nights

In the aftermath of hurricane Irma I am conscious of how important the nights were in my production schedules.

Living without electricity and access to the Internet takes me back some 60 years or more; when I had no knowledge of the Internet,

The nights are now long, dark and nonproductive; I am in bed by 6pm with only the radio for entertainment, Driving at nights without streetlights is scary; especially when some unruly drivers forget to dim their headlights.

Unfortunately the local radio news and St Maarten talk shows are my only choices of entertainment.

There is hardly a hint of classical, jazz, or sweet soul ballads; instead I have to endure the babbling sound of the rappers who don’t have to be good singers to be successful.

Thank God radio Anguilla is back on air and offering BBC radio from 6pm to 6 am.

I hope my son who is a marketing manager in the music business would forgive my ancient sentiments.

The absence of electricity and Internet means that I can no longer work on my online business at nights; which was responsible for at least 50% of my produstine time.

Now with the generator, I can carve or pot, which reduces my online productive time to about 20 % of available daylight time, about 3 hours a day.

My online activities at Wealthy Affiliate are sadly restricted.

I recall the days of the public stand pipe when you fetch water in galvanized buckets to fill your 50-gallon barrel at home. I don’t recall the water being so icy-cold and you shiver when it runs down your back from the handheld water bottle.

My most challenging times are at nights, most nights I wake at midnight thinking its morning; it might take me another two hours listening to BBC before I fall asleep again; then I usually wake again between 4.30 and 5 am when I just remain in bed until the sun rises in the east exhibiting beautiful multicolored landscapes.

I wish you were here to share the most beautiful and sculptural cloud formations anywhere; the magnificent sunrises and sunsets that will make your photo album proud.; the sound of the proud foul cocks that would put most rappers to shame.
