Entering The Arena WithThe Geeks

Hi folks there is so much to learn; Yesterday I tried to catch up with Jay's recorded videos and the bird flew over the cuckoo's nest.

On numerous occasions the letters CSS appeared when customizing a theme, ; but t always ignored it because I thought it was the professionals, sometimes called Geeks.

Jay's recorded video on April 6 was entitled -Understanding Basic & Advanced Styling elements. I was tempted to skip the video because it looked too technical, and it was for my level of Online training.

Curiosity got the better of me, so I listened to the whole recording;

What is CSS?

W3schools describe CSS as a language that describes the style of an HTML document.CSS describes how HTML elements should be displayed.

How many times have you see a notification to update your theme, and you just go ahead and click update?

The highlight of the video for me was this advice.-Avoid editing your style sheet, in other words do not click update, because if you do you run the risk of loosing your style sheet; all the customization of your theme could be lost.

I was hoping the Q & A session would approach the subject of updating again, but it didn't.

Can someone please tell us kindergarten students if the advice is relevant to other plugins; because every time I see update now, I just go ahead and click that button.

What about you?

I do exactly the same thing, Courtney.

Thanks for posing the question.
Mojalefa.

You don't need CSS unless you want to style your site elements different from the default theme configuration. Updating your theme will not affect your site UNLESS you have separate CSS file created. Even you have, there is way to go around it by creating a child-theme. If you still use the original theme, go ahead and update.

Did you watch Jay's video? what happens if you had customize your theme? Still a bit confused . I will Iust leave it alone for now

I've posted on Jay's message wall asking him to come here and enlighten us. Hopefully, he will see it and respond. - Shirley

I'm thinking it doesn't have to do with NOT hitting "update" on your plugins, but NOT using the site editor to modify any of the CSS or html within the framework files. Say, if you open header.php in the editor and change something and then hit "update" under the editor, you can mess up the framework of your theme. So DO NOT DO THAT unless you know what you are doing. I've played with cascading style sheets (CSS) in the past and was pretty confused and its easy to mess up. - Shirley

From now on my policy will be to leave it alone if you don't know. Are you sure about plugging? Can you say 'it doesn'?

Thanks for this discussion. I recently have learned as well that we could lose all of our customization if we update our theme. So I was considering not updating it. It seems there should be another answer. Marion had a lesson regarding a Child Theme and it works with not losing customization but I’m still confused.

That is why I was hoping for a discussion during the Q & A session. It appears they were proffionals in the live audience who would have been in the know.

I’ll be eagerly waiting :)

I personally don't touch CSS as I don't fully understand it andfor now won't be worrying about it too much

The whole idea of using a WYSIWYG is so you don't need to touch the underlying HTML code.

I use HTML to bring Excel charts into my posts. I'll not be changing text color in the HTML code EVER (I would have used bold text and underlined the word "ever" if I could have). lol

I didn't see the purpose of that CSS training at all. (just saying)

CSS and Coding are above my head .my issue with the technology is surfacing again.Do I have the time and energy to taken in more. The question is paid help;To do or not to do.

No, you can get it. Not much technology is needed. Think of it like driving a car, you don't need to know how to change the spark plugs to get from point A to point B. It might be nice but not needed.

Same with this, If you have a question just ask and you'll get help.

There is absolutely no need to touch the CSS unless you are doing something fancy.

When I see Update Now, I update. I will be on the watch for any updates to my theme and avoid that. I also am curious about the plugins.
Thanks for the heads up!
Sanders

My concern as well.I hope Jay sees this tread and possibly answer out queries in another Training on updating.'
