Be Careful On What You Write in Wealthy Affiliate

Some of the words you write here become keywords that get indexed and ranked by search engines like Google. So be careful on what you write here in Wealthy Affiliate.

Whether it be in your profile blog here, or in a question asked for the community to answer, choose what you write carefully.

That's the lesson I learned from a recent experience here.

Here's what happened...

I was so excited seeing referrals coming in, people joining Wealthy Affiliate through me. In some days, four. Some, three. In lean days, one.

Who will not be elated receiving referrals everyday? None, right? Everyone will be thankful seeing potential commissions coming in the near future.

But those good feelings turned sour when I happen to notice that most of the referrals were asking me the almost the same question:

"Passive to active voice. How?" (Something like that)

That puzzled me. I wondered, "What the heck is happening here?"

So, I freaked out.

I started asking questions, blogging negatively, and even suspecting Wealthy Affiliate of creating bots to fool me that I'm doing good with Affiliate Bootcamp, that even if I am not earning yet, I should keep my premium membership or else, I'll lose these sign ups coming in.

I thought they were bots. (lol)

Thanks to Marion, she reminded me of one question I asked in the classroom some time in 2016 asking, "Do you know any passive to active online converter?"

I started a probe...

I searched on Google using the keywords "passive to active online converter", and here's what I found out:

That question I asked in 2016 got ranked #1 in Google! And was possibly attracting students, writers, bloggers, looking for a fix with their writing.

As one WA member here jokingly said, "It seems they're asking you with a homework question."

Another member here, Eric, advised me to deal patiently with them, because they are my referrals. Even Daddy Mike, jokingly said "Beneficial after effects, Gomer!" which can mean, "It's okay, you're getting referrals anyway."

But the point is, they're joining WA for a different reason!

You know, there are people out there with a question in mind, and then they start typing in Google, thinking if they can find answers. So, along with Answers.com, Quora.com or Brainly, my post in Wealthy Affiliate got ranked with them (and even outranked them!).

Now, in order for them to participate in the discussion, they were compelled to register an account hastily with Wealthy Affiliate.

But unfortunately, majority of them, after getting what they want (a quick answer from me), they never return here.

So, you can imagine the amount of time I was spending replying to them, posting in their profiles encouraging them to explore WA more, and everything a good sponsor would do.. even trying to find them on social media so I can follow up them.. it was so tiring.

After finding out, I immediately unplugged the thing.

I Deleted The Question In The Classroom

I learned that since I was the one who posted that question, then I have the power to delete it. And so, I did. Gone. Ba-bye!

And you know what happened next?

That stats went down immediately. From high of 300+ content clicks per day, it went below 100... even if I posted new blog posts in my WA profile blog here.. even if there's a lot of engagement in the new blog posts.. and even if I am sharing the new posts in social media.

So, the probe ended.

What I realized is that, you can get ranked with a wrong keyword and get traffic according to that keyword.

(In that experience, looks like I attracted students with homework to finish)

I don't mean all the referrals I got are "wrong people", for any referral has the potential to change mind and dig deeper about what we have here.

But come to think what happened to me, what if that happened to you, too? Attracting students, teenagers doing homework in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia.. just needing help with their English. What would you feel?

With nobody ever minding to upload a profile pic.

My Resolution

So, now... starting today, I have this resolution that it's now time for me to stop using the "Ask Question" dashboard posting here like I'm a newbie. As I am no longer a newbie. Perhaps, if I need to ask questions, then I'll just use the Live Chat and ask SteveMand (he seems to be always available in the Live Chat like 24/7).

Then, on posting new content with my WA profile blog, always think that with any headline that I will make, think of SEO.

We know the awesome power and prestige of WA in Google, so anything you post in here, may soon get ranked high in Google.

You can even use this platform solely for the sake of getting people to sign up for WA even though the profile blog here is primarily designed to update your referrals and the community of your progress and for sharing value. (Something fellow members can benefit from, whether techniques or inspiration)

But that experience taught me something powerful.

If you can read between the lines, maybe you already knew what I mean with my word "powerful" and you already have in your mind now WILD ideas on how you can leverage this WA system for your benefit.

Again... tip: Whenever you write here, think of SEO.

And think of WA Affiliate Bootcamp.

Good luck, and see you at the top!

Wow, I actually did read your whole article...
I guess WE ALL LEARN by making mistakes, which eventually turn into PROFIT...
Thanks Gomer
Tom

Good stuff Gomer, thanks a bunch for sharing. :-)

Good to know, thanks Gomer

You answered a question I had, Gomer. I wondered about the questions we ask here

Yes, all questions asked here, they too get indexed and ranked. Blogs and questions alike.

Awesome share!

Thank you for this Gomer - valuable info!

Yeah Gomer. You don't want to be labelled some kind of push-over source of homework answers by lazy students!

On a still-related but funny note: I once saw advice on detecting passive voice that went something like, if you are able to write 'by zombies' at the end of a sentence and it still makes sense, it's written in a passive voice.

The post was written. By zombies.

... could become a proforma response to this recurring question... :)

I will remember that one - for a non-native English speaker, that can be valuable info! ;-) "By zombies". Funny! LOL! Sending you e-ice cream for that one! ;-)

Icecream gratefully devoured... by zombies! :)

:-) LOL! I'm following - but I refuse to write "by zombies" behind this one! :-) LOL!

Thanks for the tip Gomer, I will remember it. :)

Good reminder, Coach. Imagine students signing up under me for the keyword "traffic" for a homework on traffic rules :)

Yes, our blogs, training and questions are very much alive out there

Thanks for the second motion, Mommy Loes. :)

You're welcome Gomer, have a great day:)
