Would you hire you?

One of the best things about being my own boss

is

that I don't have to interview for the job.

It's mine! I hate feeling like I have to 'beg' for a job. I know what I'm good at - and I know I'm good at a great many things at this point in my life.

No, I'm not a 20 something, not a millenial, not fresh out of school. There's a bit -ok, more than a bit - of silver in my hair and a few lines around my eyes.

I know how to communicate in a cogent sentence without having to add 'like', 'ya know', and 'for real'. I know how to go more than 15 minutes without having to check my cell phone.

I know how to learn what I don't know and I'm not afraid to ask questions. And no, I'm not a model, but I still have value - unless you ask the work force. Regardless of my experience and expertise, I'm too old, too....what ever.... Seriously - screw that! Glad I'm not asking 'them'!

I also know I'm also one of the toughest

bosses I will ever work for.

And anybody who has ever worked for me will probably tell you that. I require not just a good job, but an excellent job. Simply doing your job is not enough. In one of my professional lives, I own a concierge service.

Just doing your job will not do for my clients. We must anticipate needs before they are expressed - many times they don't even realize they need/want what we recommend, but they are so grateful that we mentioned it. Anticipate needs, know the client, be observant, consumate discretion. Never - ever blow a deadline. Always go above and beyond. Know their birthdays, their families and pets. No detail is unimportant. No detail goes unnoticed. Know your resources and how to get things done. Ask the right questions. Always have a clean car. Be prepared for most anything you can imagine. And yes, manners matter!!!

But we've been in business for 12 years and counting. I've won international awards and am known world-wide as the person who has done the only industry survey and research for the association, so we have to be doing something right!

And now I have added something I know

precious little about to my professional life - the world of WA.

Although it's been nearly six months, I still don't feel entirely in my element. I still feel like a rookie. I've learned a great deal and met some of the most amazing people. And while I've learned a great deal, I still know that I have much to learn. As a boss, it kills me that I'm not further along on this path. I know the vision and the goals and I am absolutely nowhere close to achieving them - yet.

Honestly, I'm not entirely sure that I would hire myself to do what I'm doing. My lack of knowledge and experience is not helping me out. At the same time, being willing to learn something so foreign to me, the willingness to travel so far out of my comfort zone is, I think, commendable in an employee.

But if I was looking for somebody to hire to

do this, here's what I would be looking for:

  • somebody who was enthusiastic about what they were doing
  • somebody who showed up every day - or as needed, ready to work
  • somebody who was willing to learn, knowing they would make mistakes
  • somebody who was willing to do what it took to learn how to do this and to learn the industry
  • somebody who was willing to get way out of their comfort zone
  • somebody who wasn't going to quit just because they got frustrated, flustered or didn't get things right the first time
  • somebody who was committed
  • somebody who followed through and took action
  • somebody who was willing to assume responsibility for their success - and held themselves accountable for their errors.
  • somebody with good time management skills
  • somebody who could set a plan, goals and consistently work towards them
  • somebody who gave it absolutely their best shot and held themselves to a high standard of not only learning, but perfecting their skills and craft.
  • other duties as assigned (everybody's favorite catch-all job description statement!)

So, if these are the job requirements to do what i do - what we do - ask yourself

Would you hire yourself?

It is said that if you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life.

Are you willing to do what it takes to make, not just a living, but make a life - a legacy?

Do you show up, ready to make the most of each computer session and move closer to your goals and dreams?

Do you fight through the challenges - despite wanting to throw your computer across the room on a frequent basis?

Are you able to get uncomfortable - and stay there - for days - weeks, months at a time to master this knowledge base and skill; to hone your craft?

Yes? You're HIRED!

Here's to becoming and being the people we would hire to do what we do and to becoming the best at it that we can possibly be.

Cheers!

Christine

Christine, this is a great post. For me, it serves as a great self -evaluation tool.

“Do you show up, ready to make the most of each computer session and move closer to your goals and dreams?”

I have some room for improvement in this area.

Thanks for sharing this.

Christine,

There are those days I laugh at myself for even thinking
I can succeed at this. Then I realize this has been my
dream for years, and I will succeed.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts they are seriously
going to help many who read this post, including ME!

Best wishes,
Susan

Love it! Thank you for sharing. Christine "Lady Boss" you are still young, wise and very powerfull.

The entire frame of knowledge we can"t assimilate it even in ten years, if we want. So do not worry.

We need to be perseverent to absorb information all the time and wherever we go, and after spread it to the world, This will be our legacy.

I f I will hired me? I think I will make better a partnership proposal, not just hired me.;-)

Best Regards,
Diana.

Great post, Christine! I resemble a lot of what you said!! I'm at a point I don't want to go back into the looking for work world. I want to sometimes, due to the day job. lol. But I'd much rather work for myself where I'm appreciated, I work hard and the rewards are equal to the effort I put in.. even if some of the rewards are later. I know they will be there! Great job on your accomplishments with the concierge business. I work in concierge customer service, so I know a little bit about what you speak of.
