I'm not sure about this. I had meningitis and I began to have difficulty concentrating on things. Doctors said it was depression, I thought it was damage to the frontal lobes from the illness. Ten years later I'm still struggling with it as I will probly till the clock stops for me. At times I can control the feelings by mindfulness techniques and relaxation. So, I know I'm not crazy but I do tend to think in a negative way on some things. I do love to write though and I love learning news things. I have always been an over achiever in electrical school and the military and other jobs but now I feel tired and just want to chill, do water aerobics, ride my exercise bike...eat ice cream....you know...those things. Is it depression or the frontal lobes? I don't know....

I totally understand this , and yes depression is an excuse. I myself have intercranial hypertension which is in remission , adhd and fibromyalgia and chronic pain from other things where I have many moments of being in a fog when it comes to thinking . This is where you need to just need to develop coping mechanism and adapt to what physically you have . What I do when I'm feeling down is remind myself that it is all mental with how I react to things .

When a situation happens ...our thoughts come.... Those thoughts affect our emotions and feelings ...and then the end result occurs ( example.depression)

About 5 years ago I was diagnosed with severe depression and I started working on myself and now , I don't have that issue.. yet I still have the physical issues that come.with their symptoms however I chose now how I want to think and feel about them.

It does...at least to know I'm not going it alone. I have met many people who suffer from depression and adhd. Its a strange thing to go through but an MRI showed no brain damage and all my labs show I'm doing fine. I tend to think its also a mid life crisis thing going on because I tired of working for the man and went from working non stop to just quitting altogether. My dad took an early exit via a tall bridge when I a kid so could be some of that too. Idk. The sun still shines for all of us.

Unfortunately, things are rarely so clear cut. I feel like I want to be a positive person, and sometimes I am, but then my mental illness kicks in and switches everything around.

I can feel king of the world one moment and king of the gutter the next! I do my best to stay positive but its so tough!

I use to have " mental illness" called severe depression . Any mental illness will either make you go to one extreme to the other . Toxic shame does that . The healthy way to be is to know we are only capable of what we can do currently and working towards better . Toxic shame poisons this by adding extremes where a person will feel more than human ( over entitlement / narccisstic tendencies) to the other extreme of feeling inherently worthless ( self victimization/self harm etc)

I am always positive, but my mind is failing me. What should I do?

Depends on what your talking about in what ways its failing you :)

When I am presented with different choices, I always pick the wrong thing. Like buying shares, lotto numbers and so on.

Improving your Lateral Thinking Skills is what I am thinking .

Not including the lotto numbers . The lottery is a game of chance and with the odds of winning being so small of a percentage, I don't find it even logical to purchase. My aunt for example, buys $10 of lottery tickets a week for the past ten years. Hasn't won yet. So she just wasted $5,200 on idealism rather than rationalism. Now she's in the predicament of needing a new car. If she saved that money and the many other areas I tell her to, she would have the money to get that car now.

As far as shares. I like stocks , just last month the value increased where my capital gain was five times what I usually get for the month. Reason why the value went up? Politics...current economy...social.... interest of individuals towards the company ....data.... business success ....earnings increasing .....who really knows unless you research and think of all the areas of the "thing" your thinking about.

so lets say I want to purchase a share with a company because my friend suggested it or I thought it was good. then to increase my lateral thinking skills I would practice doing this...

Who is the company? How are the CEO and COO etc running the business , how well did they do in their previous jobs? What does the companies financial reports look like? What areas, if any , are within the company that is cause for concerns of a potential lawsuit ? What are their dividends like ( if any)? Are they in good standing with ther share holders? What are the concerns? Why does my friend suggest this company ? Why should I invest with them... etc.
Just practicing asking questions and thinking of all the areas , not just by what the books say but be creative in your thinking , it brings a whole new perspective of the world. :) hope this helps some
