Do you really feel like you're running a business?

I'm just curious what your thoughts are about this. One saying you hear a lot is that if you treat your site like a hobby, it'll pay like a hobby. If you treat it like a business, it'll pay like a business.

I would love to know:

- Do you really feel like you are running a business? (But do you really feel like you are?)
- If so, at what point did you start to feel that way?
- Was there a certain income you reached before you started feeling like it was a business?
- Do you feel you need to work long hours to make it feel more like a business?
- What makes you feel like you're running a business versus just working on a website?
- Do you think you NEED to feel like you're running a business in order to be successful?

I don't feel like I'm running a business, to be honest. I don't yet have the income to justify feeling like I'm running a business and it feels like a lie if I try to tell someone I am.

I'm also juggling kids, pets and the usual household stuff, so I'm not putting 100% full effort into my site (because I can't).

At the same time, that's why I like affiliate marketing. I like the flexibility.

So I'm just curious what your thoughts are. I like to see where people's mindsets are related to this and how it translates to your success (or lack thereof).

Let me know what you think below!

I feel as if in a jail cell like Clint Eastwood in Alcatraz. He started very simply by picking at the slightly eroded wet paint underneath his sink. Little by little picking away until finally a tunnel. Many obstacles on the way.
HOWEVER ! He was able to eventually escape !!! I view his efforts as the Journey and his Escape as Conversions to Profits in our Websites. It takes consistent effort which equates to treating the efforts as a serious but Fun Business. The Journey does not have to he as Grueling and hardship as Clint Eastwood's. If it is fun and interesting for you, then the Journey is Great. Oh, there are frustrations(obstacles) along the way but to conquer those means more SUCCESS, Victory and Yes Escape !..........Scotty B 🎵

Haha, I love this Scotty. Just keep picking away at it little by little until you reach success.

I started my online business back in 2010, selling crafts I designed and made. Registering it with the tax office made it more like a business.
The 1st sale was so exciting that I knew I wanted to work for myself, running a business, not having a part time hobby. The first time I had to pay tax made it a real business.
That business changed over the years until it supplied a proper income. It is time consuming but I love it. However having to cut back on orders as my commitments grew, 6 grandchildren, 2 not yet at school that I do childcare for, an 81 year old stepmother I travel to stay with for 5 days each month, home, etc meant I needed a way to supplement the loss of income.
WA will do that but its hard work fitting in enough time with everything else to build it up. I get up earlier o get in 1-2 hours before the first child arrives, then I am working into the night finishing about 11.00 sometimes later. But its worth it. I as I get the hang of it all it gets easier. The writing flows more easily, the site is getting better etc.
You just do what you can, when you can.

You are very busy, but I love how you just work around everything and do what you can do. That's what I love about this business, it just doesn't really feel like a business yet. :)

That's the best sort of business, you do it because you love it.

I always think of this as my online business. It's not the amount of hours you put in to your business that makes it a business, it's the focused time that produces results. Even if in the beginning you are just building the foundation and creating content. You still have a business and in time the financial reward will come.

Women have so many constant demands on their time that we must allocate some time to build our new business.
Just as we would encourage a child to practise to become a better guitarist, we need to practise the skills of building a business.

When you do that, you are serious about seeing results.
Have fun and enjoy the journey.
Lily 😊

Thanks so much for these insights, Lily! That makes a lot of sense.

Hi Christina, Thanks for your post and it is a good question. I feel like I am trying to run a business, but because it is not yet profitable, I am glad that I have other income just now. I can see lots of areas for development, but they all take time and effort. With the massive competition on the internet, I need to differentiate what I do and find a USP, just as any normal business needs, which is not as easy as it sounds, Alan

Great points, Alan. Finding a USP is something I've been thinking about too. My posts look the same as a bunch of other posts.

How can we stand out from the crowd?

Thanks for your thoughts!

Hiya, Christina,

First of all running a home and running around after the children is a full time job in itself. This is why I admire women with small children so much, that are doing what we do.

I still do the same but my children aren't little anymore albeit they are still demanding though lol. Having smaller children it is harder for you.

For your business model and what you do it is a business. You may not be earning what you want yet but you will in time.
Most new businesses that start off small take years to come into fruition.

Look at Jeff Bezos for example. When Amazon first started, it sold only books. Bezos would drive the packages to the post office himself. It took him a good few years to get where he is now.

I treat my work every part of it as a business. It to me is what will earn me money in the next few years to come. I still need to do more like get on YouTube etc. I have a long way to go.

I still have lots of connection that I still work with from my Local business. It's not a massive business but I do ok. Last year in my Local business was way better than this year because the parking lot closed down as it was been built on. That was a shame as the whole business was really picking up. But I don't let it get me down I just power on.

You are a Business Woman.

I google you, Christina, and I see a business woman. You have over 1K followers on Twitter. That is awesome. :)

Things take time.

I think Jeff Bezos is a good example of this after all he was only dealing with books at first. He used to do that in his old car. :) `

That's my thoughts.
Have a lovely weekend.
Debs :)

Thanks for your thoughts, Debs! I actually have no desire to be a businessperson at quite the Jeff Bezos level! lol I do enjoy a good work / life balance, and I have a feeling he's not quite balanced. Maybe I'm wrong though.

My kids are bigger also, but you're right - every bit as demanding! I'm always running them here and there. I always say if they paid me like I was an Uber driver, then I'd be rolling in it! haha

I think the 1k Twitter followers is on my old account. haha. Those were good times. :)

Thanks again, I always appreciate your input!

I personally think it's a little bit of both. Your website that you set up is a the tool or bridge that helps folks who have a need, and when they go through it and see the solution for their problem they get it and you make some cash therein.

Yes, I totally agree. But is that a business? Do you feel like when you do that that you're running a business? Just curious!

Christina,

I feel as if I am running a part-time business. I suppose it's because i am new and that I have not been much of a writer or journaler in the past. Crerating content is a struggle.

I have a limited attention and absorbtion span, so I do what I can and then stop.

I expect to begin earning as I learn more, post more, and follow the trainings.

Those are my thoughts.

Thank you for your thoughts!
