Are Comments Really Important?

I know in our training that we're supposed to get comments for our site because they help with rankings.

However, I came across this this article, and I thought it was interesting.

I just wanted to share and get your thoughts. Are comments really worth the time and energy?

I like so much this page it easily open my learning so easy through a step by step guide. I feel so good and excited when reading and practicing . I said to myself this is the real one.!!!.Thank Kyle...!

I think you're commenting on the wrong post, but I'm happy for you anyway! :)

- Christina

I don’t have proof comments make a difference. But my gut says yes and I have to follow my gut.

So I will continue to get comments.

Always follow your gut!

- Christina

Yes they are because it also helps with ranking on search engines

Danny

But do they really? The article I posted shows maybe not...

But then Jessica pointed out that maybe they do if you're a smaller blog.

I'm not sure?

- Christina

Yes even with longer post they can.

Danny

I found your article interesting and have found myself wondering about this too. I have noticed I’m getting a lot of spam recently and have been wondering if it has to do with comments. Anyone else notice an increase in spam?

Yes, there is a lot of spam but if you are using Site Comments that is the source of the spam. There is a group on there that are just trying to get through as many comments as possible to make money off them. They don't care about the quality, just the quantity. Many of us have noticed it lately.

I went back to the Give and Take Comment Thread and that is working better since there is no monetary incentive.

Thanks for the heads up...I was wondering if I should send a message to site support...or Kyle? Or do you think they are aware of the issue?
It’s so sad that there are a few rotten eggs out there spoiling things!

Yes! This is the problem I'm having. The comments are so bad. And, not only that, these guys take all the comments and the rest of us can't ever post any.

So, I was wondering if it's even worth it to worry about?

I'm thinking of letting comments go for now and just see what happens.

- Christina

You certainly could. There have been some posts on here recently about the issue and Carson commented on one yesterday so I think they are aware.

I missed that post. Do you happen to remember which one it was? I'd like to see what Carson said.

- Christina

It is the same one by Phil1944 that he posted a link to below.

Ok, thanks!

- Christina

Christina, that was a very interesting article. Thanks. This explains why I have seen so many amazing websites and blogs that do not have a single comment.

Yes, I have noticed the same!

- Christina

Wow, that's an eye-opener. It's probably fair to say that, here at WA, we do put a lot of emphasis on comments and the benefits they bring. While not dismissing their contribution to our website success entirely, maybe we should at least consider whether some of the time we spend in that area could be more beneficially utilized elsewhere. Thank you, Christina, for a very informative post.
Colette and Philip

You are quite welcome. It really made me think too.

You might also like to check out my recent blog and the many comments left on it.

I will check it out, thanks!!

- Christina

I believe there is no doubt at all that good comments are very, very worthwhile having. In a sense, they are what a blog is all about.

The key is "good".

The only reason some big sites have turned them off is the proliferation of bot-driven comment spam.

As long as you have the time and inclination to moderate your comments, you should.

Thanks, Phil. But when does it stop being worth moderating comments?

- Christina

That was very interesting and useful to read. Thanks Christina.
My opinion is that comments are worth it for my site and I suspect for most sites starting out. All the examples given in the article seem to be based on very large, successful websites that are getting millions of visitors. My site isn't at that stage yet so I think comments are more valuable for me than they are for the big guys.

If you are already ranked #1 in the search engine results than maybe you don't really need comments. If you are adding new content to a smaller site and you want it to get ranked well comments are a gold mine however! My post rankings go up overnight when I get good comments.

Since it is easy to get comments here on WA (we can still use the Give and Take comment thread even if Site Comments is suffering right now), and comments are very beneficial to small sites, I will continue to get them for now. Even if some of my posts are ranked #1, getting comments may be a way to keep my post at #1 rather than falling back down the ranks.

However, I can see once we get to a certain level with our sites it may be completely optional if we want to keep getting more.

If we only knew how the Google algorithms really work it would make the decision easier.

Thanks for this very thought provoking article.

Jessica

You have a lot of great points, Jessica. I have ben having some issues with SiteComments, so that's why I went searching.

Perhaps I need to go back and revisit the Give and Take thread? Maybe it's a little better there.

- Christina

The Give and Take was much better recently when I tried it again (I had not used it in ages). I realized those certain people are not there because they can't make money there...maybe those of us that want good comments will end up migrating over!

I have been pulling my hair out over Site Comments recently.

Yesss! I was OK with it until today when they were just all so bad. And then I can't ever comment back anyway. There are never any available. I guess because these guys are using it to make money and are totally on top of all the requests. UGH.

I may try the Give & Take thread again.

- Christina

Well, I believe, comments provide a form of social proof, also blog comment helps you to increase the ranking, it's time-consuming but I think it's worthed.
Jacqueline

Thanks for your thoughts! I'm not sure, but I'm trying to see what others think.
