Your inner dialogue is as important to your success as your outward actions. That is why self mastery is a step to your success you can not overlook, just as much as you can not overlook learning more technical and tactical skills.
The following techniques to raise your awareness of your inner strengths, might seem like boasting to some, but in order to overcome your often times negative self-talk it is important to replace it with self-talk and acknowledgements of the positive sides of our personality.
I have developed a little journaling exercise for you to re-connect with your strengths and abilities.
What you will need:
A comfortable place to sit
A journal or notebook and a pen
Answer the following questions about yourself in your journal, and be as thorough as you can. If you are having a hard time coming up with answers, try to relax, and come up with two per question for now - revisiting these questions the next day.
- Which positive character traits do you have?
- Which special skills do you have? This can be anything from making a mean meatloaf, to being able to braid hair better than anyone in your family.
- Which strength of yours have you used in the past successfully?
- What do you like about yourself the most? Which character traits, abilities and strengths do you find your most appealing?
This process might take a few days to complete. Do not push yourself or allow any negative self-talk during this time.
Once you are done with your list, re-write it, nice and neatly, for future references. Use this list as a part of your morning or evening routine, and read it anytime you doubt yourself.
