I think you may mean "theme", which is the design of the blog. There are actually many beautiful free ones, but yes, you can purchase more advanced and customizable themes that cost $20-$100. However, I think that "plain" is fine to start out with. It's easy to manage without the need to learn a bunch of customization options.

I don't even know ... I just know when I look at my blog it's boring and plain. So have you just used the templates on wordpress? or have you purchased a blog template that would make it more appealing. Maybe I haven't gotten far enough in the training to give it more character.

Most of the templates people use here are already designed for blogging i.e. Generate Press, Astra etc.

If that's what you mean I would test templates before buying in, because that can be expensive.
